Changing a Student (X) visa to a tourist visa

I currently have a Student (X) visa and residence permit. However, my residence permit expires on June 30, and my flight back to the US isn't until July 31. Does anyone know of a way to get my visa changed to a tourist visa or extend the student visa (without actually enrolling in any classes) aside from heading to Hong Kong? I have heard that there are quasi-legal visa services in Beijing that might be able to do this?
