gougou Posted February 29, 2008 at 03:56 AM Report Posted February 29, 2008 at 03:56 AM Does anybody have a list of simplified Chinese last names with, or at least sorted by, Pinyin? Every so often I come across one I didn't know yet on the phone, and it would be handy to be able to quickly look it up in a list (hoping that there's only one of its pronunciation!). The closest I could come through some googling was a page in traditional characters, for which the GB2Big conversion plug-in for some reason didn't seem to work. Quote
roddy Posted February 29, 2008 at 05:05 AM Report Posted February 29, 2008 at 05:05 AM Here you go. Culled a long list of names from the Internet, used Adsotrans to get the pinyin then sorted alphabetically in Excel. Won't be perfect as Adsotrans may or may not have handled characters with multiple pronunciations correctly. laosibaixing.xls Quote

trevelyan Posted February 29, 2008 at 05:14 AM Report Posted February 29, 2008 at 05:14 AM You can query Adso for this sort of thing directly, you just need to know the FLAG for the part-of-speech you're looking for. For names, that is this: http://adsotrans.com/uniedit2.php?word=&show_flag=on&search_english=&show_english=on&search_flag=NAME&show_pinyin=on&search_pinyin= Download the database for more advanced queries, such as sorting by any particular field. WangYuHong Posted February 29, 2008 at 06:18 PM Report Posted February 29, 2008 at 06:18 PM I'm guessing you don't want us to quote the 百家姓 ? Quote
racky Posted February 29, 2008 at 08:45 PM Report Posted February 29, 2008 at 08:45 PM you mean " 赵 钱 孙 李, 周 吴 郑 王“, these are the first class of "百家姓”. but the number of "百家姓“ is more than 100. the forth is my family name "李”, which is the most popular among all the Chinese, including American Born Chinese. WangYuHong Posted March 3, 2008 at 07:03 PM Report Posted March 3, 2008 at 07:03 PM Yeah, I started looking at it for fun (to see all the different last names out there, no matter how uncommon)... I complained to my wife that there were more than 100 names in there, and she informed me that 百 in this case means "hundreds", as in, there's about 500-ish names in there (including the two-character last names, which I find fascinating) Quote
