I was gonna read 我叫刘跃进 before watching the movie, anybody up for it?

Currently reading a translation of Terry Pratchet's The Colour of Magic, here - probably not to everyone's taste though, and although I'm only a little way in I'm not yet convinced by the translation.

I'm reading 《围城》by 钱钟书. Maybe there are others who are interested?

Started around the Chinese New Year and am about half way through now. The story is a satire/romantic comedy of sorts about the lives of a group of young people just returning from their studies overseas during the 1930s. I thought the story started a little slow but it picked up, and I'm really enjoying it. I've heard from a number of Chinese that it's their favorite novel.

I'm a big Terry Pratchet fan, and I really don't see how a translation of any of his Discworld novels could do the original justice. The books contain too many bad puns and plays on words, which are always next to impossible to translate.

I've actually got a copy of this lying around that I've been meaning to read for ages. So my vote is for this.

On my reading list as well, as is 余秋雨, so I could live with any of these suggestions. 围城 was long, though, wasn't it? Not sure whether I'd be able to finish it in a month.

Yeah, it's a longer novel, but with two and half votes, this sounds like the winner.

Wushijiao told me that 《围城》 is his wife's favorite book, and she's re-read it many times. But he hasn't read it yet, so let's get him to read it, too, for his wife's sake. Hah.

We can stretch out over two months, if people can't finish it in a month, as I haven't been able to.

There's also a well-done TV series based on 《围城》made in the late 90's. You can probably buy it in the shops and watch it after finishing the book.
