flyJones Posted March 12, 2008 at 02:28 AM Report Posted March 12, 2008 at 02:28 AM Hey, I've been browsing BLCU's internet site and cannot seem to figure out whether or not foreign students can take classes other than Chinese Language. If these classes exist (finance, economics, trade etc), are they taught in English or with English textbooks? I'm trying to determine if I would be able to get any transferable credit other than language classes for my university after BLCU. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks, Fred Quote
BrandeX Posted March 12, 2008 at 07:06 AM Report Posted March 12, 2008 at 07:06 AM It doesn't matter whether a course is taught in english or not to be accepted by a western university. In the case of America, an approved foreign transcript evaluation service must be used. There is a few, for example www.wes.org or www.naces.org Quote
adrianlondon Posted March 12, 2008 at 10:01 AM Report Posted March 12, 2008 at 10:01 AM To answer what I think is the actual question, I imagine that any University (such as Beida, Tsinghua etc.) will teach everything in Mandarin only. Even the language classes are taught primarily in Mandarin (albeit with a vocab list at the end of each chapter). Some people in the language class (eg the Japanese and Koreans) have poor English skills, so they'd be left out if the teacher used English. Did you know BLCU stands for Beijing Language and Culture University? It's unlikely they'll teach any of the subjects you list, in any language. Quote
Lu Posted March 12, 2008 at 10:46 AM Report Posted March 12, 2008 at 10:46 AM Well, they have a whole course in computer science, so I wouldn't be surprised. And I think that nowadays it's called Beijing Language University, or did they change the name back again? Quote
rob07 Posted March 12, 2008 at 10:51 AM Report Posted March 12, 2008 at 10:51 AM From the BLCU website: School of International Business The financial Deportment was established on April 2001, which recruits finance-oriented undergraduates and international economy oriented graduates. Professor Liu Ke (PH.D) currently holds the past of the dean of the Financial Department. As the envy of BLCU the Finance Deportment is characterized by its unique language learning environment, use of English by its teaching staff in teaching finance-related courses, its intention to put Chinese students and foreign students in the some class and its goal to train highly qualified personnel with comprehensive professional makings, who, after graduation, will be able to participate in international competition in the field of finance. I once met someone who had been a manager at a big 4 accounting firm and got sick of it, so he picked up a job lecturing economics in English at BLCU instead. He spoke absolutely no Chinese whatsoever, so as part of his package, BLCU gave him free Chinese lessons. Quote
feebie Posted March 12, 2008 at 10:55 AM Report Posted March 12, 2008 at 10:55 AM I know a Chinese guy who is studying International Relations at BLCU I also have a Chinese friend studying "teach Chinese to speakers of other languages" she regrets going to BLCU because the lack of other courses. She takes Chinese, Japanese, English, Korean, newspaper and literature or something Anyway so I don't think BLCU has many other subjects except languages You can do business Chinese Tsinghua offers an MBA in English (I think) I have talked to Chinese people who go to BeiDa and Tsinghua and they say some of their lectures are in English and some are in Chinese. go to the web page The Beijinger recently someone put up an add for a group of foreign students at Beida who are not studying chinese but studying other subjects good luck Quote
