Janne Posted March 24, 2008 at 04:32 PM Report Share Posted March 24, 2008 at 04:32 PM I'm looking for a program to practice writing characters. It should display the character on screen on a PDA, with light grey for instance. You then copy the character on the screen with this light grey as an aid. Furthermore, I'd like to have a flashcard mode where a character is requested, and if you want you can get the program to hint the first line, then second line and so on. Does anyone know of such a program?
ipsi() Posted March 25, 2008 at 01:49 AM Report Share Posted March 25, 2008 at 01:49 AM Not to the best of my knowledge. Pleco is the closest, but it's not really what you want, I'm afraid. Sorry.
imron Posted March 25, 2008 at 02:45 AM Report Share Posted March 25, 2008 at 02:45 AM Agree. Plecodict probably comes the closest to what you are looking for.
flameproof Posted March 25, 2008 at 07:36 AM Report Share Posted March 25, 2008 at 07:36 AM Furthermore, I'd like to have a flashcard mode where a character is requested, and if you want you can get the program to hint the first line, then second line and so on. Does anyone know of such a program? I don't think there is such a program. But since your target is "learning to write" you could consider to learn Wubi as an input method. That will bring you closer to stroke order thinking then Pinyin IME.
Janne Posted March 25, 2008 at 03:13 PM Author Report Share Posted March 25, 2008 at 03:13 PM Thanks for your feedback all of you! Kind of strange that such a program does not exist, or maybe it's just me who thinks it would be nice features. I do have a background as a programmer, although I've never developed anything for PDA:s, but if such a program does not exist I'm quite compelled to try to develop something. As I imagine it, it would have a built in spaced repetition engine as well. The copy-character part of the program would probably be fairly easy to implement, but the flashcard and hint-part would be trickier. So... anyone know of any free databases with stroke order info for the 3000 most common characters? Alas, besides aiming at learning to write characters I also want to be able to pronounce them. So I think I'll stick with the pinyin input method for now, but thanks for the suggestion!
roddy Posted March 25, 2008 at 03:28 PM Report Share Posted March 25, 2008 at 03:28 PM start here, perhaps. You'll get some more results if you try searching on here for stroke order database, etc, but I'm not sure what's available.
tooironic Posted March 27, 2008 at 02:33 PM Report Share Posted March 27, 2008 at 02:33 PM There's a few of these type of programs available, but only for non-handheld OSs. I remember years ago I used to be addicted to a game that is simliar to what you just described - it was a DOS game too believe it or not. It would be great if someone around here knew about it...
