I just encountered the above expression in the following context:

你怎么把头发烫得跟钢丝似的, 镇难堪.

Does it mean your perm makes your hair look like steel wire? It seems strange to say that to someone so I thought it may have a more toned-down meaning in Chinese or a totally different one.

Any illumination would be gratefully received.

Hi, that means when u do the perm, you just do it terrible and your hair looks very hard and nearly as the same as the steel. Rhetorically this is exaggeration and metaphor.

Do I explain it clearly? If not dont hesitate to ask me again.:)
