davejaw Posted April 7, 2008 at 06:16 AM Report Posted April 7, 2008 at 06:16 AM hi all, my main source of income is playing poker online. i will be spending a few months in beijing and i was wondering if i would be able to play there. if so, would i run into any legal issues? thanks for your help, David Quote
imron Posted April 7, 2008 at 07:40 AM Report Posted April 7, 2008 at 07:40 AM I don't know if you'll run into any legal issues, but you might find that some websites are blocked. It might be worth investing in a VPN such as witopia, which will allow you to get around any blocked websites. *Disclosure: Chinese-forums is a Witopia affiliate. If you use that link to make a purchase, then for less than 1 RMB a day you not only get a fully-functional VPN which will solve all blocking issues within China, you also drop a few coins in the forums' coffers. simonlaing Posted April 7, 2008 at 01:38 PM Report Posted April 7, 2008 at 01:38 PM I have a friend in Nanjing who gets by on winnings from online poker. There can be restrictions to the IP from China on some smaller sites. (Chinese have good hackers I guess) You need a Western Bank account to deposit money into and out of. But generally it works fine. Also there can be some issues withdrawing money, sometimes the best rate you get is from your debit card in the atm, but doing it this way you don't get a receipt , the receipt is helpful in changing RMB back into western currency. It is definitely possible. good luck, Simon:) Quote

breaa Posted April 14, 2008 at 10:26 AM Report Posted April 14, 2008 at 10:26 AM I just arrived in Shanghai, and I have been unable to load pokerstars properly. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong but it might be blocked. Quote

imron Posted April 15, 2008 at 04:33 AM Report Posted April 15, 2008 at 04:33 AM As I mentioned earlier, probably the most convenient and practical way around website blocking is to use a VPN. If you're technically inclined, setting up a private proxy server is also a good solution. *Disclosure: Same as above. Quote
roddy Posted April 15, 2008 at 05:01 AM Report Posted April 15, 2008 at 05:01 AM Can't get to pokerstars from Dalian either. It works through a VPN fine. Quote
