imron Posted April 10, 2008 at 04:01 AM Report Posted April 10, 2008 at 04:01 AM Chinese speaking Australian prime minister Kevin Rudd is currently visiting Beijing, and gave a speech in Mandarin yesterday at Beijing Uni. Does anyone know if there's a full transcript or video/audio of it online? I can only find little bits and pieces of it, but would like to hear the full thing. Here's a short clip of his opening comments. Quote
wai ming Posted April 10, 2008 at 10:26 AM Report Posted April 10, 2008 at 10:26 AM I've only seen English translations of his full speech floating around, but I'd really like to see/hear what he actually said in Chinese too. I wouldn't suppose anyone here was able to attend in person? Quote
tooironic Posted April 10, 2008 at 10:29 AM Report Posted April 10, 2008 at 10:29 AM ooooh yes I would also love to get my hands on that too! Quote

imron Posted April 10, 2008 at 12:05 PM Author Report Posted April 10, 2008 at 12:05 PM I guess I should have clarified that I wanted to see the original Chinese and preferably a video or audio version. I've seen that version already, and you'll notice it's missing things like the jokes he was making in his opening remarks etc. Quote
gato Posted April 10, 2008 at 12:21 PM Report Posted April 10, 2008 at 12:21 PM Yeah, I know. That's why I said this was the "Australian" version. Quote
imron Posted April 10, 2008 at 12:24 PM Author Report Posted April 10, 2008 at 12:24 PM Haha, ok, I misread that as "here it is in the Australian", which is the newspaper that published it. Quote

kdavid Posted September 28, 2010 at 09:14 AM Report Posted September 28, 2010 at 09:14 AM I've been looking at this clip of his as an example of good humor used during a presentation. Am I correct that at the end the joke is: 天不怕,地不怕,只怕老外说中国话。 Also, what would be a more eloquent way to translate this into English. I've translated it as: "We’re not afraid of the sky; we’re not afraid of the ground, the only thing we are afraid of is foreigners speaking Chinese." Quote
roddy Posted September 28, 2010 at 10:02 AM Report Posted September 28, 2010 at 10:02 AM Maybe use God and the Devil instead of heaven and earth? I learned it as 洋鬼子 rather than 老外. From TY Chinese. Ah, easy days. Quote

889 Posted September 28, 2010 at 10:50 AM Report Posted September 28, 2010 at 10:50 AM It's how you get there that's scary. (Or should I have said, "Speak for yourself . . . .") Quote
creamyhorror Posted September 28, 2010 at 12:08 PM Report Posted September 28, 2010 at 12:08 PM Nothing to fear in all heaven and hell, save for the laowai who speaks Chinese well. Quote
roddy Posted September 28, 2010 at 01:04 PM Report Posted September 28, 2010 at 01:04 PM Actually, you could also use this as an example of cultural sensitivity - using 洋鬼子 here could well have been a bit 难听。 Quote
