Hi,

This is rather a simple question, well I hope! I'm wondering what is the meaning behind friends names. I'm just begnning to study Chinese and I'm just really curious what do their names mean. I've known them for a while and well I hope it would be a bit of a suprise to tell them that I know what they mean. I would greatly appreciate any help. Their names are:

Pit Yee

Pit Ting

Thank you again!

They look like Cantonese given names for girls. But there are only a few words in Cantonese which are pronounced as "pit", and they are not used in names.

I suspect it should be 'kit" instead. If it is "kit", then most likely the character is , meaning clean. The two names can be -

Kit Yee - 潔儀 - clean and graceful

OR - 潔怡 - clean and happy

OR - 潔宜 - clean and pleasing

Kit Ting - 潔婷 - clean and good looking/beautiful

But "kit" could also be "杰" or "傑", meaning outstanding, which are usually used in names for male. So it would help to know if your friends are male or female.

Thank you for the help. Both of the names are of girls. I don't think they are Cantonese names, but then again, its a possiblity. Well they write their names, in English they write their names Pit Ting and Pit Yee...both girls. As far as I know they are from Hong Kong but if it matters, I'll try finding out. Thank you again.

If I recall correctly, for Pit Yee, one of the names means happy? If that's any help..

Yes, the names are Cantonese!...and she said that its not Kit...someone says that the Pit means beautiful and pretty? So would Yee be (if the Pit is correct) if its also pronounced the same way?

If it means "beautiful", I think it should be "pik" (碧),

as in the Beck in Beckham (碧鹹蟲.... oh no, should be "碧咸")

It means shine, beautiful, etc.

xniteshadwx,

we can guess but we can't be sure until we see the actual Chinese characters, there are too many possibilities.

But even if we see the characters, only their parents would know the true meaning of their names.
