yohosuff Posted April 27, 2008 at 07:02 AM Report Share Posted April 27, 2008 at 07:02 AM Could someone kindly explain the usage of "招呼 in the above passage? My dictionary lists 5 definitions: 1. call; shout 2. hail; greet; say hello to 3. ask; tell; notify 4. take care of; look after; attend to 5. watch; mind; take care I'm not sure if the meaning in this context is 1 or 3. Any thoughts?
HashiriKata Posted April 27, 2008 at 08:47 AM Report Share Posted April 27, 2008 at 08:47 AM In the above context, I think it means "to call/ to beckon (someone) to come over".

yohosuff Posted April 27, 2008 at 10:04 AM Author Report Share Posted April 27, 2008 at 10:04 AM Ah yes, I see now. 大卫 enters with 王蜂 and finds his old classmate 玛丽 there. He goes over and talks to her briefly before calling 王蜂 and 田中 over for introductions. Thanks HashiriKata and greenmoon55. It turns out that I didn't realize what 王蜂 and 田中 would have been doing while 大卫 and 玛丽 began to chat. They both probably took a step back to let the two old friends speak, partly out of respect, and partly because they didn't know her. I originally thought all four of them were together, but now I see that's not the case. Thanks again!
