whereishunter Posted May 2, 2008 at 03:33 AM Report Posted May 2, 2008 at 03:33 AM Hi everyone, My name is Hunter and I am looking for advice on a Chinese name. I want to use 猎 (lie4) as it means Hunter (猎人) but dont really know what else to put with it? Maybe 1 or 2 characters? I'm more after a good sounding name with 猎 in it so the over all meaning is not that important. As the 猎 is the reference to my English name. Thanks Quote
skylee Posted May 2, 2008 at 01:04 PM Report Posted May 2, 2008 at 01:04 PM Consider 衡獵 (Heng2 Lie4). For a more interesting name, consider 衡獵仁 (Heng2 Lie4 Ren2). Quote
Lu Posted May 4, 2008 at 07:44 AM Report Posted May 4, 2008 at 07:44 AM Won't that sound strange? In my (non-American) ears, naming your child 'hunter' is already a bit strange, but well, different cultures, different customs. But would it sound normal in Chinese? Quote
skylee Posted May 4, 2008 at 02:33 PM Report Posted May 4, 2008 at 02:33 PM I thought Hunter was a surname, no? Using 獵 in a name is strange imho unless it is a surname but it is not. Quote
Luobot Posted May 4, 2008 at 03:04 PM Report Posted May 4, 2008 at 03:04 PM There was Hunter S. Thompson, who wrote, "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas." Edit: how about: 猎珲]特 (Lie4 Hun2 Te4) Quote
ayoujulia Posted May 5, 2008 at 02:02 PM Report Posted May 5, 2008 at 02:02 PM Hi Hunter, In English, hunter has no negative meaning but in Chinese it's different. Few Chinese people use 猎 as names since in Chinese 猎 means hunter, which means violence or killing. I would like to suggest a new name based on the Pronunciation of Hunter but not just translate Hunter into Chinese. 航德 is recommended. 航 means sailing (also has the metaphoric meaning of the process of improving), 德 means good personality. You can also tell me your surname, so I can help to find a Chinese surname for you. Hope you like this Chinese name 航德. however, you can have a Chinese name with no relationship with your English name. Chinese people usually give name to kids with some meaning or wishes. for example, many girls are called 丽/莉. this is becuase parents wish they have a pretty daughter. So, you can give me more personal information to get a more relevant name for yourself. Quote
whereishunter Posted October 19, 2008 at 11:56 PM Author Report Posted October 19, 2008 at 11:56 PM Just wanted to let you know with the Chinese name that I will go with. 韩仲 韩 because Han sound like the start of Hunter. I was in Korea for 3.5years and with out going there I would not have came to China and also it is a Chinese family name. 仲 for many reason but the first is that it means "second among brothers" which is good as i have an older brother. Zhong also for middle as in China. Also my Chinese friends have said that my name sounds very Chinese. I would be interested to know in what other people think? Thanks Quote
