Q1: What’s the purpose of 即 in the sentence below?

‘根据国际医学报告,每2千500名新生婴儿中,即有1名患有自闭症,因此,估计XX国有超过10万名患有自闭症的孩童,其中2万人情况严重’

Q2: Can I see examples of the usage of 卻? I see this a lot when reading but can’t figure out its purpose from a grammatical perspective.

Thanks

A1:

"即" hardly means anything in such sentence. We can drop the token "," and the character "即" to have another sentence without any change of its meaning:

"每2千500名新生婴儿中有1名患有自闭症"

A2:

“卻” is the same as "却"

sometimes it means "However", "Yet"...

我很丑却很温柔(I looks terrible. However, I'm elegant.)

Q1:

Here, 即有 = 就有 = 便有。 Just to emphazise the "有".

Q2:

"卻" is the traditional form of the "却".

Q1: thanks there, so it's just an empty character on its own?

Q2: Thanks but I should be more clear, I want some examples on what it means when used in sentences, i.e.

我知道你我都沒有錯

只是忘了怎麼退後

信誓旦旦給了承諾

It nearly "empty" here in Q1, but not always, not everywhere. One of its meanings is "i.e.".

信誓旦旦給了承諾

卻被時間撲了空

The meaning of 卻 here is similar to "倒(dao4)" and "可(是)" but a little bit weaker in emotion (or mode). I can't translated the sentence with "卻" well, because it is off-logic one. Maybe it is from something like 《大话西游》. I find an example from dictionary:

今天下雪,不冷。 ------ It's snowy, but not cold.

I usually translate 卻 as 'but'.

Beware! If you ask for examples you might get replies like this.

I agree with Lu.

Another query on 卻, got this example of a tv show

你自己卻這麽晚回來喔

Translation is roughly (forgive the poor translation and english here) - 'You yourself have returned late'

This implies that 卻 means something like 'too' in this case. Or did I get it wrong?

你自己卻這麽晚回來喔

Still, "but" fits here.

'but You have returned so late'

Implication here :

Ohters returned early or

you wanted others to return early, but you yourself .....

Sorry if i'm irritating ou people out but does 卻 mean 'but' again in these sentences??

有一些話打好了不幹傳

從前情農如酒遇著防衛

情人能重逢心未獲連繫

有一些話打好了

2)

3)

從前情農如酒卻遇著防衛

從前情如酒遇著防衛

Previously the affection was as strong as alcohol, but (now) encounters with defence.

4)

情人能重逢心卻未獲連繫

情人能重逢心未獲連繫

Lovers could meet again, but the hearts do not strike together.

You can find the essentially different meanings of the 卻, here:

却病延年 —— to ward off disease and prolong life;

望而却步 —— to step back in fear.

Thanks mondo,

I think I know why I found it confusing now. 卻 is akin 'but' in english it can be at different positions of a sentence i.e. 你不回來- I but did not return or 但卻,你還沒回來了- But you still haven't return.

卻 amost the same as 但 in meaning, but used differently in a sentence (position):

我已经回来了,你还没有回来.

我已经回来了, 你还没有回来.

here 卻 and 但 shouldn't exchange place.

by the way, "了" (le) in the end of a sentence means the action or something mentioned in the sentence have finished or complete. so we can say

我回来了

but can't say

你还没回来了. (just "你还没回来" will be Ok)

信誓旦旦:assertorically

承諾:promises (to be together for ever)

卻被時間撲了空":but as the time going on, the promises have not be obeyed.

It means the time can change people's feeling.

"每2千500名新生婴儿中,即有1名患有自闭症" is not a standard expression

we should use“就”instead of "即"

though the two words have the same meaning sometimes, but out of idiom, you'd better use"就"

and we used "即"to express a same meaning, then it means"it says that"

"i am NO.1,it says that(即) no one can beat me"

却,means "but"
