"smooth transition" doesn't make any sense to me...

I think "smooth transition" is Ok here.

Actually, 圆滑 here means "round and smooth" . The idea may be better explained with a pics. It is not 圆滑 in pic 1 when the level get lower, while 圆滑 in pic 2. 圆滑的过渡 at point A' and B',
