deterius Posted May 24, 2008 at 04:07 AM Report Posted May 24, 2008 at 04:07 AM Hi guys I've just moved to Shang Di area in Beijing- and it's pretty far out there. I'm staying with a friend of mine- he's renting an appartment out here- so we went with the landlord to the the police station and they refuse to register me! they say that during the olympics, all foreigners are supposed to stay in hotels (which is just bizzare). And wont register me! As a solution, Im thinking to rent a room here and then try to register- maybe that way they will register? Is Beijing on crack this summer? Quote
gougou Posted May 24, 2008 at 05:34 AM Report Posted May 24, 2008 at 05:34 AM Just yesterday I heard that you can only let relatives (and there only immediate relatives, apparently, though I have yet to see anything written) stay in your place for the duration of the Olympics. Quote
imron Posted May 24, 2008 at 06:22 AM Report Posted May 24, 2008 at 06:22 AM Haha, I wonder what will happen to all those people looking to rent out their apartments/spare rooms for $$$ during the olympics. Quote
onebir Posted May 24, 2008 at 08:46 AM Report Posted May 24, 2008 at 08:46 AM They restrict the hotels foreigners can stay in - pushing up the prices & making it harder to find one. Then they force foreigners to stay in them. Anyone would think the country was being run by the hoteliers party. Did you have a rental contract? I've been asked for one when subletting... Quote
self-taught-mba Posted May 24, 2008 at 11:03 AM Report Posted May 24, 2008 at 11:03 AM Considering that the gov't has put out guidelines for homestay costs and have put out an appeal for additional host families . . . this looks not right. Quote

Oh, you mean those greedy landlords who have kicked out their loyal tenants to make a quick buck during 08/08/08? Quote
deterius Posted May 26, 2008 at 08:54 AM Author Report Posted May 26, 2008 at 08:54 AM So does anyone know- If I rent do I have a good chance of being able to register with the police (deng ji)? Quote
onebir Posted May 27, 2008 at 05:50 AM Report Posted May 27, 2008 at 05:50 AM You could sign (/fake?) a sublet contract with your friend. I did this once when they wouldn't let me register without a contract. We just went to a nearby agent, asked for a contract, filled it in & went back... Quote
ethiele Posted June 2, 2008 at 06:31 PM Report Posted June 2, 2008 at 06:31 PM Is this only in Beijing or in the whole country? Quote
