Ian_Lee Posted April 10, 2007 at 09:50 PM Report Posted April 10, 2007 at 09:50 PM The original list is very outdated and incorrect. 2. You only buy Christmas cards after Christmas, when they are 50% off. -- Older Chinese in North America do not send X'mas cards while younger generation have sent the electronic cards earlier than most other Americans did. 4. You have a vinyl table cloth on your kitchen table. -- Many Chinese families have custom-ordered top glass on their dining tables. Does anyone know why dining tables are sold without top glass in North America with the exception of those Ming Dynasty redwood furniture shops? 8. You use the dishwasher as a dish rack. 9. You have never used your dishwasher. -- I would say such bad habit actually shortens the life span of the dishwasher. 12. You eat all meals in the kitchen. -- Most other American families eat their meals in the kitchen or the nook while Chinese families usually eat their meals in the dining room. 15. You always leave your shoes at the door. -- That is the habit of Japanese and Koreans. Chinese wear shoes into their houses in China. But in Hawaii, everyone including White and Polynesians, all leave their shoes at the door. 16. You have a piano in your living room. -- In almost every State level piano competition, the winner is most likely a Chinese nowadays. 18. You iron your own shirts. -- What? Of course the wives do the chore. 19. You drive a Honda or Acura and are less than 5'8"tall. -- It seems Toyota/Lexus is more popular with Chinese in North America. Quote
Xiao Kui Posted April 11, 2007 at 12:05 AM Report Posted April 11, 2007 at 12:05 AM 8. You use the dishwasher as a dish rack. 9. You have never used your dishwasher. -- I would say such bad habit actually shortens the life span of the dishwasher. I don't think it would shorten the life span of the dishwasher. on the contrary, the dishwasher, if never used, would remain in like new condition indefinitely. Between my sibs and I, we've rented from enough Chinese landlords in NYC to know that the above statements are true. Dishwasher stacked with porcelain bowls with clear signs of never or not having been used in a long time. . Does anyone know why dining tables are sold without top glass in North America Probably because it's more expensive and not necessary. Also many people either use a table cloth or enjoy the look of a good wooden table top. Tables are also sold without top-glass in mainland China. Quote
Ian_Lee Posted April 11, 2007 at 12:24 AM Report Posted April 11, 2007 at 12:24 AM Xiao Kui: I use the dishwasher twice a day. And per opinion of service personnel, the dishwasher is prone to easy breakdown if you just periodically use it. Of course, if you never use it, then it is brand new. But why pay for a $700 dishwasher-turned-dish rack when you can buy a $200 cupboard to store the dish? And I don't doubt that many Chinese don't use the dishwasher (Read my previous post). Regarding glass top on dining table, all those Ming Dynasty furniture shops in U.S. attach glass tops onto their dining tables. Of course, glass is ridiculously expensive in U.S. Those Ming Dynasty furniture shops usually have those glass tops custom-made in Dongguan, then ship to U.S., and still cost just about half of the price for the glass-top made in U.S. Quote
Ian_Lee Posted April 11, 2007 at 12:49 AM Report Posted April 11, 2007 at 12:49 AM Some more: 25. You've eaten a red bean Popsicle. -- I longed for it. But the only red bean popsicle is found in the Korean supermarket which is not the real stuff. 33. You wash your rice at least 2-3 times before cooking it. -- That depends. The cook in the Chinese restaurant don't even bother to rinse it once for you. I rinse once for Texas-grown medium grain but twice for Thailand-grown Jasmine rice. 38. You majored in something practical like engineering, medicine or law. -- Unusally only second generation majors in Law while first generation usually majors in Engineering (Mainland/Taiwan) or Accounting (HK). 78. You keep most of your money in a savings account. -- You usually keep most of your money in CD or the account with Charles Schwab. And in the days before internet trading, Chinese customers crowded Charles Schwabs even before NYSE started trading. Quote
