今朝 - This morning, right now or today?

今朝,if character by character, it looks like "this morning". It is a written expression and actually means "TODAY" in the sense

1) = this day:

今朝有酒今朝醉

2) = nowadays

数风流人物,还看今朝。

My Chinese dictionary (精選漢英-英漢詞典 — 新版) agrees with monto.

However, 今朝 is used in Cantonese to mean "this morning":

今朝

今朝早

Edit: just checked 教育部重編國語辭典修訂本:

今朝

  1. 今天早上
  2. 現在

  • 1 year later...
  • 1 month later...

今朝 is not commonly used in Mandarin. In Shanghainese, it does mean 'today'. For Mandarin, this word would be only used in literatures like poetries.
