Hello all,

I am an engineering graduate with a chinese level of about 8/9 (HSK). I am thinking about getting into translating (C-E). Done the whole teaching English thing, need to try something different!

I've read the various thread on translating, thanks a million to those who contributed.

However my question is how do I go about finding translating jobs? What websites advertise?

More importantly what are the names of the companies that hire/have hired translators?

www.translatorscafe.com i believe is a good resource for those trying to get started in translating. There are lots of forums, even language specific ones, and also many agencies are listed. I signed up with some agencies, but got a job that kept me from following through on a translating career, but there are definitely lots of experienced people on that site that can help point you in the right direction.

When i was signing up with agencies at the beginning i was definitely asked abt my experience, which at the time was nil, so it may be good to take some underpaying or "pro bono" jobs at the beginning just so you have samples of your work to show to future employers.

Thanks Xiao Kui.

I have checked that site before and they have a list of translating agencies. Are these the only companies that hire, (hopefully) full time translators/proof readers?

Would they hire people with nil experience?

I thought perhaps large corporations would need some translators.....

You can also look at proz.com. Translation-specific sites in China, I'm not sure about, but you can try the usual job sites - there are often translation jobs on thatsbj.com now, you can also try the Chinese sites like 51job.com. The translation sites tend to be geared up to putting translators and clients or agencies in touch, if you want full time work they might not be so helpful.
