steveg Posted June 17, 2008 at 07:22 AM Report Posted June 17, 2008 at 07:22 AM G'day, I'm heading to Kunming in Feb and was wondering what the internet service is like there, or in equivalent places. I guess speed isn't a massive issue, I just require a service where I can have a large download usage. For those of you who are in China now, if you wouldn't mind listing your (for my interest and that of others in the future)... Type of plan: (ADSL/Cable etc.) Cost of your plan: Download speeds: (kb/s) Allowed bandwidth usage per month: Other fees: Set up? Thanks guys Quote

Senzhi Posted June 17, 2008 at 04:23 PM Report Posted June 17, 2008 at 04:23 PM Here you go for Shantou, Guangdong (but I guess it'll be similar everywhere in China, at least where internet is available ... don't forget some local areas still don't have electricity). Type of plan: ADSL (China Telecom) Cost of your plan: Honestly forgot somewhere between RMB 1500-2000 annually Download speeds: 3M = 240 Kbytes/s Allowed bandwidth usage per month: no limits Other fees: a deposit for the modem/phone, around RMB 300 (I think ) Quote
Rincewind Posted June 18, 2008 at 12:43 AM Report Posted June 18, 2008 at 12:43 AM I'm in the north east, so it's cheaper than the big cities. Type of plan: ADSL (CNC) Cost of your plan: 800 per year or 1200 for two years. Download speeds: 2Mbits/sec Allowed bandwidth usage per month: No limit Other fees: Chap comes to the house and does the setup for you. You have to pay for the modem though it's not expensive. Type of plan: Broadband (in my office) Cost of your plan: 300 per year Download speeds: 256Kbits/sec Allowed bandwidth usage per month: No limit Other fees: Chap comes to the house and does the setup for you. You have to pay for the modem though it's not expensive. Quote
mr.stinky Posted June 18, 2008 at 09:29 AM Report Posted June 18, 2008 at 09:29 AM in kunming with china telecom: annual fee, no limit, ADSL, speed = 2M: 960 RMB the setup fee (i believe) is 58 rmb, which will give you installation and a modem. (note: the guy who does the install shows up on a pink girls' bike with white basket, has 100m of used phone line and a canvas bag containing a hammer and a screwdriver. he will be unable to plug in a power drill, will attempt to put the drill bit in backwards, then will try to drill through glass. good luck.) (note 2: the install guy doesn't know the ip address or how to get you online, he just does the wiring. the next guy that comes out may have that, or may show up to tell you you need the ip address in order to set up your configuration, then will call a third guy to come out...........) other fees.... change of address: 58 rmb change of name on the contract: 10 rmb (this is when you want to change the address, but don't have your ex-girlfriend's id card, whose name is on the contract, cause she set it up for you cause you were new here, but they won't let you change the address without it, but for 10 rmb, you can change the name and you don't need the id card, and then for another 58 rmb you can change the address) Quote
jiaozi Posted June 19, 2008 at 05:39 AM Report Posted June 19, 2008 at 05:39 AM Whatever you do, don't use China TieTong. Their connection is off or clogged too often. Even though they're cheaper, it's not worth saving a little money for a service that doesn't work. Quote
