Is there a difference between 熟知and 熟悉? I have consulted a couple of dictionaries and one seems to indicate that 熟知 means just "being acquainted" whilst

熟悉 is to know well. Please can someone let me know if they are indeed just interchangeable terms.

Cheers in advance.

in my opinion, they are interchangeable in most of the sentences..from the literal meaning.熟悉 means u know something well, such as u know some place, some people well.but 熟知 means they know something even better than 熟悉..the extent is different...:)

There are several reference books that cover "near synonyms", etc. in Chinese. One of the biggest (and I think best from looking at about 5 different ones in the bookstore) is "1700 Groups of Frequently Used Chinese Synonyms" By Beijing Language and Culture University Press. About 108 yuan ISBN 978-7-5619-1265-2

It has extensive examples, a double index to find any word and it's pair, tables of common usage differences for each set (sometimes more than 2 words).

The Chinese level "seems" to be upper beginner to lower intermediate. That is, I can understand most of it without looking too much up :)

Another book, which I just got as part of the "review a book" promotion (on a different thread), is a smaller volume called "A Handbook of Chinese Near-Synonyms". ISBN 7-301-07044-6/H 0987 (# of printings) 18 yuan

The smaller book also has extensive English explanations as well as as Chinese explanations and examples. It doesn't have usage tables however. I will be doing a longer review after I've used the book a bit.

All of the Chinese Language Teachers here at HIT (Harbin) have a copy of the first one (above), and I would also say it seems the most comprehensive of the books I've seen.
