xuechengfeng Posted June 9, 2004 at 05:12 AM Report Posted June 9, 2004 at 05:12 AM if you wanted to tell somebody their child was "cute" is there a good word for this? i've been taught haokan [very good to look at] and piaoliang [attractive] which both seem inappropiate in a western sense to say to someone about their child. it almost sounds like i am a child molestor. Yuchi Posted June 9, 2004 at 01:43 PM Report Posted June 9, 2004 at 01:43 PM 可爱 Use "hen" (very) 很 or "hao" (good/has sense of very) 好 in front of "ke ai". ex. 很可爱 or 好可爱 Add an a at the end for effect.. Quote
Guest Yau Posted June 12, 2004 at 10:08 PM Report Posted June 12, 2004 at 10:08 PM i've been taught haokan [very good to look at] and piaoliang [attractive] which both seem inappropiate in a western sense to say to someone about their child. I've heard that some foreigners also feel amazed at the phrase "又胖又白" (fat and white) --- it's to tell a child is healthy and cute. BTW, what will you say to appraise other's children? Smart... Clever.. Nice? If i say they are cute and beautiful, will i be a ...hmm. pervert? Quote
xuechengfeng Posted June 12, 2004 at 10:16 PM Author Report Posted June 12, 2004 at 10:16 PM well, i'm not sure whether you are from america or not, but it is pretty standard to say oh wow you have a really cute/good looking baby/kid, and it isn't considered perverted.. unless you have a record for those kinda things Quote

BeijingSlacker Posted June 13, 2004 at 07:09 AM Report Posted June 13, 2004 at 07:09 AM Use "hen" (very) 很 or "hao" (good/has sense of very) 好 in front of "ke ai". ex. 很可爱 or 好可爱 I suggest you not use 好 if you are a guy or you are over 25 yrs old. 好 sounds sissy. Quote
xuechengfeng Posted June 13, 2004 at 07:10 AM Author Report Posted June 13, 2004 at 07:10 AM wait.......... hao sounds sissy in this context or in general?? hao is my favorite word!!! Quote
Quest Posted June 13, 2004 at 11:37 PM Report Posted June 13, 2004 at 11:37 PM in this context and in a few others. but since you are a foreigner its okay, people won't think of it that way. saying 可爱 is in a way sissy, anyways. Quote
