Can the above expression be used for other things like "partying until the small hours" or "burning the candle both ends". I think the expression would be mostly used for studying until the wee hours but wonder if it is applicable for other activities too.

Any help would be appreciated.

It is used for mental work including studying, it always give the idea of hard wording (though sametimes just out of being forced)

Haven't seen it be used in activities involving mostly physically.

Yes, I always thought 开夜车 carried a connotation of studying or such activities. But the other day in class, my teacher said that it can also be used for leisure/non-studious activities. That seemed strange to me, but she's Chinese so I didn't argue.
