I think the expression would be mostly used for studying until the wee hours but wonder if it is applicable for other activities too. Any help would be appreciated. But the other day in class, my teacher said that it can also be used for leisure/non-studious activities. That seemed strange to me, but she's Chinese so I didn't argue.
