roddy Posted June 21, 2008 at 02:44 AM Report Share Posted June 21, 2008 at 02:44 AM I've been offered the unmissable opportunity to help someone set up MSN on their Apple Mac. Microsoft Messenger for Mac 7 at the bottom looks the most likely bet, but there's no Chinese version. I found a link to this page here as having a Chinese version, but I'm not convinced it is and can't check it on my machine. Does anyone know? Will be able to figure it out later when I have a Mac in front of me, but would like to save some time if possible.
muyongshi Posted June 21, 2008 at 02:51 AM Report Share Posted June 21, 2008 at 02:51 AM Use adium is my advice! As long as the Chinese language is selected as the main operating systems language it will automatically detect it. However, it may be less of some of the more advanced features of messenger itself but as the mac version is short of many things anyway it won't make a difference. Also don't be fooled by the fact that it says you can use QQ as well with adium, it hasn't worked for a year...
muyongshi Posted June 21, 2008 at 03:03 AM Report Share Posted June 21, 2008 at 03:03 AM I downloaded the file that the second link was linked to and all it is is the same program as the first link...no Chinese version and there is no language option for it either. And no help topic about other language versions so if Chinese is necessary I would advise going with third party stuff.
roddy Posted June 21, 2008 at 03:09 AM Author Report Share Posted June 21, 2008 at 03:09 AM Hmmm, could do. I'm just concerned that the ability to connect to so many networks is going to make it more complicated. All we need is MSN.
muyongshi Posted June 21, 2008 at 03:13 AM Report Share Posted June 21, 2008 at 03:13 AM Well once you help him get it set-up there shouldn't be a problem really....especially if you do automatic sign-on. Very simple interface and the "only" complication for him would MAYBE be if he tries to add a new account which as you said though, he only needs one....so... Anyway, hope it helps somehow! roddy Posted June 21, 2008 at 03:42 PM Author Report Share Posted June 21, 2008 at 03:42 PM Got MS's one up and running without too much hassle, although it repeatedly wanted to download an update. Think it might have been me not installing it properly though - Mac's confuse me, none of the buttons are in the right place, and when you find them they do the wrong thing. /runs away before Mac aficionados turn up
imron Posted June 21, 2008 at 05:28 PM Report Share Posted June 21, 2008 at 05:28 PM Once again, penny-arcade has a comic for everything.
pandaxiongmao Posted June 22, 2008 at 03:48 AM Report Share Posted June 22, 2008 at 03:48 AM To install MSN Messenger on the Mac, it just needs to be dragged to the Applications folder. Not sure why it would need an update. Microsoft's software on the Mac tends to be even more poorly designed than it is on Windows. Anyhow, if your friend needs help, it might be better to use Adium. That at least has a Chinese interface (as Muyongshi noted) when 简体中文 is set as the top language in the International section of System Preferences.
