Hi, I would like to introduce myself in Chinese just before a speech. Although I am no beginner of Chinese myself, it has been a few years now since I have talked regularly in Mandarin. I am glad I have found this forum, I hope I can make new friends all over the world. I am an Indonesian of Chinese descent and have studied abroad in Singapore and Malaysia so I am fluent in 3 languages (Indonesian, Mandarin, English). Anyway, below is what I would like to say, and I hope you guys can help me correct any flaws you may find :)

(I am a semester 5 university student <-- 华语怎么说?).

*My father really wanted me to be trilingual (fluent in Mandarin and English as well as Indonesian)* <-- translate this to 华语 please? (I came back to Indonesia to further my studies (?) ).

I think that's about it. Anything else I should add?

oh, and please translate this for me:

"On paper, the results would be obvious, Team 1 would definitely crush Team 2! But in reality it's a different story."

Thanks!

Klang,Malaysia

Welcome to the forums here. Great language skills you have been endowed with.

Since you are an Indonesian of Chinese decent I was wondering if you minded letting me know which word you would relate to most in the following contexts "Sino-US event" or "Chinese-US event". I think that using "Chinese" would be better if I am trying to reach Indonesian, Malaysians, Philippinos etc of Chinese decent. Is this a correct assumption?

Sino might just sound like it was for people in Mainland China.

Thanks in advance for your response.

读了你的回信, 我已经brushed up a few Chinese language skills that have gone rusty over the last few years (<--这个又怎么用华语说?).

ScoobyQueen: Thank you, I am glad I have joined this forum. You are correct, we don't usually use 'Sino - (some other country)' to describe an event because it would imply that event has something to do with mainland China.

Chinese descent of Indonesia: 印尼华侨, Malaysian Chinese: 马来西亚华侨, and so on. Hua2 Qiao2 means Chinese descent.

Chinese descent outside of China: 海外华侨 or 海外华人.

as for Sino-US events, you can put 中美 in front of the name of the event. For .e.g.: 中美羽球大赛 --> Sino-USA Badminton championship/competition.

This can also be used to describe wars. For e.g.: 中日大战 = The great Sino-Japanese war.

Hope this helps :) Where do you guys live btw?
