chinagirl14 Posted June 26, 2008 at 12:22 PM Report Posted June 26, 2008 at 12:22 PM Hi, I applied for long term mandarin language study in tsinghua and BCLU for the fall semester, on both applications i stated that i'd be willing to stay a year, would it be possible to just enroll for a semester at a time? I don't like the idea of committing one whole year to something i'm not even sure of... (something i obviously didn't think about when applying for the long term course). is it easy to get your visa extended like if i apply only for a six month visa and decide to stay another semester? and would anyone know the rates for the blcu dorms? any help would be much appreciated Quote
billiardsmike Posted June 27, 2008 at 07:33 AM Report Posted June 27, 2008 at 07:33 AM I wouldn't worry about it a bit. Six month programs are still considered long-term study and will be handled by the same department. I did the same at Beiwai last fall, only because I had forgotten to make enough ATM withdrawals to cover the fees for a full year. The only drawback will be the 400+ kuai for visa renewal, but it's very simple. I just handed the money to the university, along with a 1,500 kuai deposit toward tuition and they had it back to me in two weeks. However, you should save about the same by not being required to get the health exam/certificate required for those declaring that they will stay a year. Quote
stephanhodges Posted June 27, 2008 at 10:10 AM Report Posted June 27, 2008 at 10:10 AM And, in case that wasn't completely obvious , most places will only help you get a visa matching the length of time you pay them for. This is their way of getting you to commit to their program. So, if you pay for 6 months, it's rare to find a school that will agree to giving you a 1 year visa. I do know of one place that does still get visas without payment, but it's for Koreans only. This isn't a snub on Koreans, rather I think their country enjoys a close relationship with China. Quote
chinagirl14 Posted June 28, 2008 at 11:22 PM Author Report Posted June 28, 2008 at 11:22 PM billiardsmike: Thanks, thats one more thing i'd like to skip... the medical @.@ i'm deathly afraid of needles :S thanks maybe i'll also "forget" to withdraw hahaha! stephanhodges: actually in my acceptance letter it says that i'm staying for a year so ideally it would be me getting a shorter visa than my "intended stay" of one year thanks for your input though Quote
