gougou Posted July 2, 2008 at 11:39 PM Report Posted July 2, 2008 at 11:39 PM But would Chinese people display tantrums, argue loudly, be petty and bullying in public anywayI think you should be able to see an instance of pretty much all of these just walking down a random street in Beijing. Quote
roddy Posted July 3, 2008 at 06:55 AM Report Posted July 3, 2008 at 06:55 AM Yep, especially as the producers could pick and choose whoever they wanted from the applicants - if they wanted that kind of behavior they could certainly get it. The trouble wouldn't be finding the necessary high-drama personalities, it would be the regulatory environment. SARFT's unlikely to let anything like that go ahead unless the people involved are presenting the correct image of China, and good role-models for the young. And frankly, that's going to be dull. There wouldn't be any stand-up rows about who stole the cornflakes, and there certainly wouldn't be any tabloids offering prizes for the first couple to have sex, etc. Contestants would have to earn their shopping budget by memorizing political tracts and could avoid eviction by being extra-enthusiastic at morning exercises. I had a quick search but for some reason 'Big Brother China' just brings up lots of pages about surveillance and censorship. Quite possibly I'm wrong and there's already something been broadcast - even if just on provincial TV. But at the moment I don't think you could get anything like the European versions, which are now more or less just freak shows anyway (the UK one certainly is). Not because you couldn't find freaks in China, as Gougou said you can find them easy enough, and if necessary I'm sure us forum members can nominate former bosses, landlords and spouses who would qualify. But you couldn't get them on telly. Even the fairly innocuous reality talent show format got sharply reined in, causing predictions of what it would be like if the format was on staid old CCTV rather than a relatively populist provincial operator to come true. Big Brother wouldn't stand a chance without some heavy watering-down. Quote
simonlaing Posted July 8, 2008 at 04:27 AM Report Posted July 8, 2008 at 04:27 AM China does have some reality shows, like their version of the Apprentice , Win in China, There's a TravelChina which is similar to road rules and was on the international channel Shanghai, (sadly they have shut this option off to residents of Nanjing). There are other adventure, and American idol ones too, but no BB real world just people with emotional issues living together.. Unless I am missing one, have fun, SImon:) Quote

chrix Posted June 4, 2009 at 01:05 PM Report Posted June 4, 2009 at 01:05 PM But would Chinese people display tantrums, argue loudly, be petty and bullying in public anyway (even if it did mean loads of money) or does it go against what would be acceptable? Never met a Chinese who was hot headed and somehow cant really imagine it either. You've never witnessed a fight in a Beijing hutong? Even "Outrageous Chinese" teaches you how to argue with hot-headed Chinese people. But I would be afraid for my health and safety if I actually said any of the things they teach you to say.... Quote
