athena09 Posted July 9, 2008 at 06:22 AM Report Posted July 9, 2008 at 06:22 AM Hey all, I'm hoping someone can tell me the meaning of the character on this necklace. I got it when I was a kid and just found it again recently. I completely forget what I was told it meant though, so if anyone can help me out, that'd be awesome, thanks. I'll attach a picture Quote
imron Posted July 9, 2008 at 07:01 AM Report Posted July 9, 2008 at 07:01 AM It means chicken. It's also one of the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac. Quote
zhxlier Posted July 10, 2008 at 07:52 PM Report Posted July 10, 2008 at 07:52 PM It's also slang for prostitute. Please do not wear it if you are female. Quote
trien27 Posted July 11, 2008 at 03:41 AM Report Posted July 11, 2008 at 03:41 AM It's also one of the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac. In the sign of the Chinese zodiac, it's a "Rooster", as opposed to a Chicken or Hen. In English, you'd have "hen parties", where women get together and bond. But, it is not so in Chinese. In Chinese slang, it also means "prostitute; hooker; whore"! So, like someone said, "Do not wear it, if you are female." Quote
BrandeX Posted July 11, 2008 at 05:43 AM Report Posted July 11, 2008 at 05:43 AM I have the same one for "snake". Quote
monto Posted July 12, 2008 at 12:16 PM Report Posted July 12, 2008 at 12:16 PM "Rooster" is what it meant originally, but "chicken = prostitute" is the side effect, the advice that "do not wear it if you are female" is best choice. Quote
roddy Posted July 12, 2008 at 12:25 PM Report Posted July 12, 2008 at 12:25 PM Ah, if you're outside of China it's quite possible nobody will be able to read it anyway. Wear it if you like it. Quote
lilongyue Posted July 13, 2008 at 07:01 AM Report Posted July 13, 2008 at 07:01 AM If the place you bought this necklace sells every character for the Chinese zodiac, get this one: 龍. It means "dragon," which is pretty cool, at least much cooler than "chicken," I think. Quote
imron Posted July 13, 2008 at 07:31 AM Report Posted July 13, 2008 at 07:31 AM But possibly not what you want if you weren't born in the year of the dragon. Quote
lilongyue Posted July 13, 2008 at 07:35 AM Report Posted July 13, 2008 at 07:35 AM Oops, just saw that the necklace was from the OPs childhood, and not something bought recently. But possibly not what you want if you weren't born in the year of the dragon. Yes, if one's motivation is to buy the character that represents their Chinese zodiac sign. I was assuming that wasn't the motivation, and was just something they thought looked nice. Quote
allenwallace Posted July 21, 2008 at 06:26 AM Report Posted July 21, 2008 at 06:26 AM Can anyone tell me what this one means? Quote
LiYuanXi Posted July 29, 2008 at 02:39 AM Report Posted July 29, 2008 at 02:39 AM My zodiac is 'Dog'. So I guess I will be a 'bitch' if I wear one? Quote
