消费欲望 - fixed expression?

My teacher gave me this expression with which to write a short essay (along with other words). The expression does not occur in the dictionary as such (www.dict.cn), but from a breakdown of the words I gather it must mean "consumer needs". Is this correct and if so, is there a fixed expression in English that covers this term?

Consumer demand, consumption appetite, desire to consume, all are possible translations depending on the context.

I think “消费欲望”means customer's desire.

In Chinese,

1）消费 as a noun, means buy something to meet the need of produce and live,

[comsumption;expense]∶为了满足生产和生活的需求而消耗物质财富

for example: 生产消费，生活消费，日常消费

2）消费 as verb, the meaning is same. the object usually is money or energy source.

for example: 消费10元钱买书, 消费电力照明

3）欲望 noun, means consuming yearn

[desire;lust]∶强烈的向往,对能给以愉快或满足的事物或经验的有意识的愿望

for example: 学习欲望，欲望都市《sex and the city》

In this phrase, 消费充当了名词性形容词修饰欲望，消费 is a noun but in here as a modifier of 欲望.

In a literal translation, yes. But it doesn't sound like natural English. The standard expression in economics is "Consumer Demand".

I know it's not the most accurate indicator but a quick search for "customer's desire" on Google returns just over 1 million hits. "Consumer Demand" gets over 12 million.
