82riceballs Posted July 21, 2008 at 02:50 PM Report Posted July 21, 2008 at 02:50 PM (edited) I found this in a news article from a while ago. What does 自況 mean? I couldn't find it in any dictionary. Thanks! Edited July 21, 2008 at 03:23 PM by 82riceballs Quote
82riceballs Posted July 21, 2008 at 03:23 PM Author Report Posted July 21, 2008 at 03:23 PM Coincidentally, I just found another sentence with 自況. For some reason, it's ALSO about the SK president. I have no clue what this entire sentence means. Help! Quote
-Bee- Posted July 21, 2008 at 05:36 PM Report Posted July 21, 2008 at 05:36 PM Wenlin translates it as: 自况[-況] zìkuàng v.p. compare oneself to; consider oneself to be ..but let's wait for a more advanced learner's verdict Quote
achiese Posted July 21, 2008 at 06:48 PM Report Posted July 21, 2008 at 06:48 PM Bee is right. 況 can also mean to compare to, so 自況 equals to 自比. 網 is a typo.
creamyhorror Posted July 22, 2008 at 07:44 AM Report Posted July 22, 2008 at 07:44 AM It seems to usually be used in the structure 以... E.g. 他以英雄自况 = to compare oneself to a hero Quote
82riceballs Posted July 22, 2008 at 03:47 PM Author Report Posted July 22, 2008 at 03:47 PM Thanks for the info! I'm going to try to translate those sentences: 選前以台灣的李明博自況,勝選後也自認經濟主軸是致勝關鍵。 Having claimed to be the Lee Myung Bak of Taiwan prior to the elections, after winning the elections, he also thinks that the key to his victory was economy. Since Lee Myung-bak was elected as president of SK, both the green and blue parties have compared themselves to him. This childish action to enhance their reputation (?), however, only makes them the subject of laughter. If there are any mistakes (and I'm sure there are), please correct them. Thanks! Quote
