dermur Posted July 31, 2008 at 09:31 PM Report Posted July 31, 2008 at 09:31 PM Has anyone ever encountered food-related (or drink for that matter) competitions in China? Either preparing or eating...I'm thinking along the lines of chilli cook-off or barbecue contests which are popular in some parts of America. Quote
Maxwell Plank Posted July 31, 2008 at 11:15 PM Report Posted July 31, 2008 at 11:15 PM A friend of mine was involved in a chili cook-off in SH. Google: "chili cook-off" Shanghai Quote
gougou Posted August 1, 2008 at 12:24 AM Report Posted August 1, 2008 at 12:24 AM There were a chili eating contest and a hot wing eating contest in Beijing just in the past few days; I think they mainly catered to the foreign crowd. PS: In case you're wondering, I don't think being able to consume large quantities of food qualifies for a foreign expert certificate yet. Quote
dermur Posted August 1, 2008 at 08:50 PM Author Report Posted August 1, 2008 at 08:50 PM Quite so - but I'm thinking more along the lines of a competition which relies more on quality than quantity (not that shovelling 4 lbs of chilli down your throat doesn't require some admirable qualities)! Dumpling making maybe? Or a Chinese equivalent to the Medoc marathon? Quote

adrianh Posted August 2, 2008 at 04:22 PM Report Posted August 2, 2008 at 04:22 PM On the BBC there was recent a show called "Storyville" which had a short series (maybe 5 episodes) about "The biggest Chinese restaurant in the World". One of the episodes showed a competition between chefs in the restaurant as to who could make "Fried Live Fish" the fastest. The competition also featured the preparation of snake, which was still wriggling on the plate when it was served. Quote
liuzhou Posted August 4, 2008 at 04:06 AM Report Posted August 4, 2008 at 04:06 AM Food and cooking competitions are quite common. Here is a link to one with an Olympics theme! http://news.gxnews.com.cn/staticpages/20080803/newgx4895ce9b-1595245.shtml Quote
