y00nsk Posted August 1, 2008 at 03:24 AM Report Posted August 1, 2008 at 03:24 AM When speaking with Chinese people, I often hear them saying 算是。。。 算有。。。 what does this mean? I can't think of any examples off the top of my head, but I'm sure you have encountered these before. I don't see what the difference is between 算是/算有 and 是/有. Sometimes after I say something my friend would simply reply "mmm.. 算是" I asked her to explain the meaning to me, but I still don't understand. Quote

ldf3254 Posted August 1, 2008 at 12:00 PM Report Posted August 1, 2008 at 12:00 PM i think 算是or算有 is used in this kind of stitution: for example, in a talk, you discribed something to your friend.but what you said is not the exact one your freind want, and of coures what you said is not all wrong.so he said "算是or算有"to you. when someone uses 算是or算有,that means he is not so sure about the context, but at least the context has some value. This is what i i think,i hope i can help you!:) Quote
ivan_hkbn Posted August 1, 2008 at 05:00 PM Report Posted August 1, 2008 at 05:00 PM Good question. My English isn't good, but let me try to answer. you can construe "算是" and "算有" as the same meaning. They means "Yes, but not so sure". And they are a little bit different on using. For example, If someone ask you 那是你女朋友吗? (Is that your girl friend?) You can give your answer as 算是 (Yes, but not 100% sure) If someone ask you 你有女朋友吗?(Do you have a gril friend?) You can say 算有 (Yes, you can construe I have, but I'm not 100% sure) In addition, 是 means "be/is/am/are/was/were" or "Yes". 有 means "have/has/had". Commonly, if it's just only a character of 算, we would construe it as 计算(calculate). But we don't often individually use 算. If we say 算啦 or 算了吧, that means "forget it", sometime, it can be construed as "ask someone to give up" 算一算 or 计算 means "calculate" ( 1+1= ? ) 算法 means "algorithm" Quote
