A manager tells a worker that he's been late several times and the worker responds:

经理,这是哪儿跟哪儿呀.

What does he mean? Thanks in advance.

Boss, that's nonsense!

or Boss, that's ludicrous!

Perhaps a little too 口语 for the workplace depending of course on both the general work environment and relationship you have with your 经理

i think the worker said this not only beacuse he thouguht what the manage said is ridiculous but also is hard to understand.

when chinese is confused about something ,we usually say"这是哪儿跟哪儿啊!".

哪儿跟哪儿

哪 is interrogative pronoun, means where.

儿 is 儿化,such as 今儿,玩儿。

跟 is conj here, means and or with.

哪儿跟哪儿 is idiom, express that two things have no connection and intersection but be pulled to together constrainedly. It is usual used in negativing other person’s opinion.

For example:

A: 年长的是John, 年轻的是 Marshall。

The old man is John, the youthy man is Marshall.

B: 哪儿跟哪儿,年轻的是John, 年长的是Marshall.

No, you said is wrong, the youthy man is John, the old man is Marshall.

On the other hand, 哪儿跟哪儿 also express the meaning of finding some reason for oneself.

For example:

A: John 你不好好学习,总是看电视,要不这次考试又不及格。

John, you always watch TV, do not studay hard, so you didn’t pass this exam.

B: 哪儿跟哪儿,我只是想放松一下。

What you said, you misunderstand me, I just want to relax myself.

Of course, this phrase need special sentence, according to text conditions.

Personally, I think the example sentence is not complete and appropriate for showing the usage of 这是哪儿跟哪儿. And if possible, I would changed it to like this:

Manager: You have been late several times, so you must go home later than others.

worker: 经理,这是哪儿跟哪儿啊.

I think when we get two things(late several times and go home later than others), and we don't think there are any relation between them, we can use 这是哪儿跟哪儿啊, to show our puzzlement of that.

Of course, you can try to understand the 这是哪儿跟哪儿啊 by their chinese meaning. The first 哪儿 is undefined, and second 哪儿 is also undefined, and two undefined things are definitely unrelatable. So you can understand the phrase easily.

A said, "somewhere there is a country called China"

B said, "somewhere there is a country called England"

will you say, Ah, china is England?

哪儿跟哪儿啊, means two things have no relationship, enventhough they all called somewhere "哪儿"

Is this something people only say in the north, with 儿话, or can someone say "哪里跟哪里" ?

I've never heard anyone say 哪里跟哪里,but I have heard people from the south use “什么跟什么嘛!”

yeah, you are right. 哪儿跟哪儿 is used more in North, and 什么跟什么 used in South much more. 哪里跟哪里 is also right. the three idioms share the same meaning. they all means there is little relationship between two things.

這是那裡跟那裡啊(囧)?! "What the hell is this?!"

哪(儿)跟哪(儿) See above.

什麼跟什麼嘛! "What is this sh-(cameltoedroppings)?!"

Excuse the crude language. but they usually aren't offensive depending on the tone

Their usage is pretty much around the same. with varying degree of overly complicated difference.

basically:

男ア"UNICORNS ARE REAL! :D"

男イ"什米?! THEY ARE?! :D"

男ア"NO! Har har."

男イ"什麼跟什麼嘛!" or "這是那裡跟那裡啊?!"(This one sounds odd when used here. >_>)

Some people who just use whatever "sounds right" or fitting to the sentence.

I personally hear "什麼跟什麼嘛!" or variations of it used a-lot more everywhere I go.
