BeijingSlacker Posted June 15, 2004 at 07:47 AM Report Posted June 15, 2004 at 07:47 AM Just a response to that "88 ways to know you are Chinese".(http://www.chinese-forums.com/viewtopic.php?t=1967) 1. You unwrap Christmas gifts very carefully, so you can save and reuse the wrapping (and especially those bows) next year. No, I do not celebrate Christams. 2. You hate to waste food... a) Even if you're totally full, if someone says they're going to throw away the leftovers on the table, you'll finish them. (Your mom will give a lecture about starving kids in Africa) B) You have Tupperware in your fridge with three bites of rice or one leftover chicken wing. No, I throw away leftover all the time and my dad hates it. but I always save roaches, even the smallest ones. 24. You also use the jam jars as drinking glasses. I use whatever is available at that moment. 27. You have a collection of miniature shampoo bottles that you take every time you stay in a hotel. No, actually I often forget to bring my own stuff when I check out. 36. You fight (literally) over who pays the dinner bill. No unless I really want to pay. You are welcome to try it out with me if you have any doubts. 37. Your dad thinks he can fix everything himself. Yes he does and he really can. He is a freakin' good engineer. 38. Quest Posted June 15, 2004 at 01:17 PM Report Posted June 15, 2004 at 01:17 PM that stereotype list matches better with american chinese. Quote
geek_frappa Posted June 15, 2004 at 01:35 PM Report Posted June 15, 2004 at 01:35 PM you are complete correct. it is likely that this list was created by a person who has never had a Chinese friend. these appears to be observations -- not qualifications. Quote
TSkillet Posted June 15, 2004 at 07:07 PM Report Posted June 15, 2004 at 07:07 PM Martial Arts Movies are mainly for foreigners who only watch summer popcorn movies. Uh, no. All those Shaw Brothers movies were made for Hong Kong audiences. And the list is a joke list. It's just a joke people. *Sheesh* Quote

BeijingSlacker Posted June 22, 2004 at 09:52 AM Author Report Posted June 22, 2004 at 09:52 AM I am going back to Beijing in about one month, and will stay there till either Sep or Jan. Then I will come back to Vancouver to finish school, which will take about eight months. After graduation I will be back in Beijing and no plans so far after that point. If you folks are planning some kinda get-together in Beijing, I would love to hear about it. Quote
Haoqide Posted June 24, 2004 at 05:23 PM Report Posted June 24, 2004 at 05:23 PM Um, yeah, I identify with lots of those, too, and I (unfortunately) have absolutely no Chinese blood running through my veins that I'm aware of. Quote
Xiao Yu Posted June 25, 2004 at 09:31 PM Report Posted June 25, 2004 at 09:31 PM I thought that list was hilarious. So did my friend, a Chinese who came here for later schooling. A lot of it was true, especially of my parents, who are full-blooded, born and raised in China, like putting plastic on the tv remote control (and almost everything to keep it clean), saving wrapping paper from Christmas presents (which we give each other for the sake of giving presents). I'm an ABC so maybe a lot don't apply to 'real' Chinese, though I think a lot of them are just common sense. And I got a real kick out of the list, which I think was the main point to begin with. zackzhou Posted July 8, 2004 at 11:38 PM Report Posted July 8, 2004 at 11:38 PM this list looks pretty objective, and most of them are true, especially for old generation.(like my parents and grandparents) I agree with beijingslacker to some extent, 'cause his responses are very personalized. so, what I'm trying to say is 你在抬杠. darwinian Posted August 31, 2004 at 03:49 PM Report Posted August 31, 2004 at 03:49 PM I have to say this list is pretty spot on with a few members of my family and im a caucasian australian Quote
yonglan Posted August 31, 2004 at 05:33 PM Report Posted August 31, 2004 at 05:33 PM A lot of that applies to my parents generation and before and I am NOT of Chinese ancestry. But then some are of course fairly particular to Chinese. Slacker's point is very well taken, though. Surprised someone would post that here; sounds more like an ESL Cafe post. Quote
