lj2008 Posted August 15, 2008 at 10:15 PM Report Share Posted August 15, 2008 at 10:15 PM Hello! My brother recently got this tattoo and I was wondering what it means exactly. He has not really told my mom or I and I want to know the secret. My friend who is part Chinese says she is only 90% sure the characters are 陽德考 (yang2 de2 kao3). She said that if it is those characters that it basically means light, kind/happy, and test ( 陽德考). But she is not completely positive. Is she right? Could a native speaker please help me and let me know what "light, kind/happy, and test" mean when placed in a sentence. Do these characters make a sentence and if so what does it mean when in sentence form? What does it say? Does it make any sense or is it just gibberish? Someone also said it could be a name. He recently broke up with a girlfriend while he was at college so I was curious if maybe it was a girls name. If it is a name, does the name mean anything? Anyway, I hope that someone could shed some light on this for me. I just want to know what message he is making with this tattoo on his neck. kindest, Lindsay here is the picture! skylee Posted August 16, 2008 at 01:47 AM Report Share Posted August 16, 2008 at 01:47 AM It does look like 陽德考. For the meanings of individual characters, take a look at the links below - 陽 -> http://cdict.giga.net.tw/?q=%B6%A7 德 -> http://cdict.giga.net.tw/?q=%BCw 考 -> http://cdict.giga.net.tw/?q=%A6%D2 Do these characters make a sentence and if so what does it mean when in sentence form? What does it say? Does it make any sense or is it just gibberish? No, they don't make a sentence. The meanings are listed above. No, they don't make sense. Yes, it looks like gibberish. Someone also said it could be a name. He recently broke up with a girlfriend while he was at college so I was curious if maybe it was a girls name. If it is a name, does the name mean anything? It could be a name. But I am not aware that any of the three characters can serve as a surname. For meanings of the characters, refer to the links above. It could also be a transliteration of a name. The three characters' pronunciations are "Yang" "De" "Kao". Do they sound like perhaps your brother's name or his girl friend's name? Anyone you know has a name like "Young" or "Doug" etc? skylee Posted August 16, 2008 at 02:01 AM Report Share Posted August 16, 2008 at 02:01 AM BTW, how did you take the picture? Does he know that you took a picture of it?
Lu Posted August 16, 2008 at 02:10 PM Report Share Posted August 16, 2008 at 02:10 PM I think that Yang is a surname, although not a common one. Yang Dekao could be a name, but then it looks more like a guy's name than a girl's to me.
Hofmann Posted August 16, 2008 at 08:53 PM Report Share Posted August 16, 2008 at 08:53 PM 陽德考 sounds like a male name. 陽 and 德 are written wrong, not to mention all three are quite ugly. I bet the tattooist was illiterate.
