Could anyone help me differentiate the two?

Oh,and could someone check this:

Is it proper to say 你爱困 or 你爱睡觉?

I'm get really confused when my mother speaks in the 咱们语 dialect of the Philippines.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

In chinese,困 means "want eyes to rest or relax".but 睡觉 means "to sleep".

So if you want to go to sleep , you can say :“我困了(I am tired or my eyes is tired..)or 我想睡觉了(I want to sleep)"

In other words , 困 is a feeling.but 睡觉 is a action. That is why you cannot say :"我爱困(I love tired.)",you should say :"我爱睡觉。(I love to sleep.).

This is just the basis Chinese.Between Chinese the word 爱 has an another meaning of."always easily" So "我爱困" can also translate to " I always easily feel tired.

Hope it can help you.

困 sleepy, adjective

睡觉 sleep, verb

you can say 我现在很困,我想去睡觉了

I want to go to bed, is that what you mean? 我爱困 or 我爱睡觉 both sound weird. maybe your mother is speaking some kind of dialect rather than mandarin?

Hey,

Just wondering does your mother speak Hokkien (閩南話)?

ai2-khun3 (愛睏) in Mandarin means 想睡覺.

Does your mother say something like:

Li1 e ai2-khun3 be3?

Only guessing

Yup, my mom speaks the fukien dialect. However, the one spoken in the Philippines is so different from the mainland that it sounds unintelligible to the ones from the mainland.

BTW:

She says it something like: Di ya ai kun lo.

When I saw this I immediately thought of khun in Hokkien ("sleep"). In Mandarin 'sleep' is 睡觉; you shouldn't confuse your mother's dialect with it.

Ok, thanks for all your help. At least I'll be able to differentiate some mandarin words from fukien ones.
