vertrni Posted September 1, 2008 at 03:02 PM Report Share Posted September 1, 2008 at 03:02 PM I have been using Pinyinput for several months, and find it to be very handy. The only problem I've got is that "v" is invariably displayed as "ü". How can this be solved ?
imron Posted September 1, 2008 at 03:23 PM Report Share Posted September 1, 2008 at 03:23 PM Pinyinput was designed to do this because the v character doesn't exist in valid pinyin and the ü key doesn't exist on most keyboard layouts. In my mind, it therefore made a great deal of sense to put ü on the v key. Is there a reason why you want to type v when you are typing pinyin? jslee Posted September 1, 2008 at 06:49 PM Report Share Posted September 1, 2008 at 06:49 PM A webpage explaining pinyin, used v instead of ǚ I'm guessing that you're using it for other languages and want to type a v?
ABCinChina Posted September 2, 2008 at 05:16 AM Report Share Posted September 2, 2008 at 05:16 AM "v" and "ü" can be considered the same thing and I don't think that aspect of Pinyinput should be changed. Those webpages you visited only use "v" because they do not know how to type "ü". In proper pinyin, "ü" is used.
Jim Kay Posted April 6, 2012 at 12:43 AM Report Share Posted April 6, 2012 at 12:43 AM I have a related but slightly different problem. My base keyboard is US-International. As expected, with an IME, when I type, I get the little box showing what I'm building. This works for everything except the 'v' character on my keyboard. I just get an empty box and I cannot produce the ü in any way I've tried. v3, for example, produces just 3. (And leaves me stuck in the 'partial input' mode with the little box open.) Any suggestions for this?
imron Posted April 6, 2012 at 04:06 AM Report Share Posted April 6, 2012 at 04:06 AM Pinyinput has two modes of operation - "checked mode" and "unchecked mode". This is indicated on Pinyinput's toolbar with a check mark and can be changed by clicking the check mark or by changing it from the options page (you can also use the shortcut key CTRL . (period)). If you are using "checked-mode" you can only input valid and complete pinyin syllables. ü by itself or at the start of a word is not a valid pinyin syllable, and so you will be unable to type this if you have checked mode enabled. If you wish to type ǚ or another syllable that starts with ǚ, then you need to switch to unchecked mode. Then you can type ǚ using v3. 外国赤佬 Posted April 6, 2012 at 05:40 AM Report Share Posted April 6, 2012 at 05:40 AM Basically, the correct pinyin for the ü sound by itself is yu. But if, for example, you want to type nǚ 女, you just input nv.
