That's because there is no translation for the name Jamil

The best you can get is a transliteration, and that means there are dozens of possible variations. See here for a further explanation.

As far as I know, initials just don't exist in Chinese.

Well, since the initials he wants are 'ji', and ji is valid pinyin, maybe he can just pick any character with 'ji' and call that his initials? 吉 comes to mind. Just because 1.2 billion Chinese don't have initials doesn't mean that he can't have one if he wants, right? (sh)

imron, I was thinking (I know, unusual for me) that this question comes up often often, and your response is so complete, that we should just take that response, modify it a bit, and turn it into a wiki entry. Would you object?

I'm guessing Jamil's surname starts with an I, and that what he wants is not 'ji', but J.I. Which is impossible in Chinese, since Chinese doesn't have letters.

That being said, getting 吉 might be the best idea of them all. Unlike any transliteration of 'Jamil', it is actually meaningful, and it has some relation to his name. This would be a tattoo that Chinese wouldn't laugh at (if it's done well), that westerners would find as cool as any other Chinese tattoo, and that has some meaning to the bearer.
