Chinese Workout Terms?

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

I usually go to the gym here in China but have trouble expressing myself when it comes to certain words. Unfortunately, these words probably can't be translated by a dictionary since they're specially used by people who workout in the USA. Can someone please help me with these terms?

Lift Weights - As in, I want to go lift weights instead of cardiovascular or badminton. So 運動 is not specific enough. *Edit I've figured out this one to be 舉重.

Repetitions - As in, I usually do 3 sets of 10 repetitions on the bench set. The word I'm looking for isn't 重複.

Sets - As in, How many sets do you have left? Can I work in?

Work In - I think this one is only used in the states and is sort of slang for jumping in and doing a set when someone else if working the machine.

Good question... I had the same troubles working out at Bally's. I usually just used completely simple sentences and pointing, which worked, but I'd be interested in seeing something more specialized.

Hmm, sounds about right. Thanks.

So if I wanted to work in, can I say, "我可以跟你共用這個機器嗎"? That just doesn't sound right to me...

I don't know what "work in" means in English. Maybe it is a phrase that gym goers are more likely to use. Could you say "use it in turns"? Maybe 挨次 or 轮次? This is probably wrong, but please let me know.

At least, it’s rather close.:) Hehe. Perhaps you can say, “我可以跟你一起用这款健身器材吗?” or “我也想使用这款健身器材,你不介意的话,我们一起用,行吗?”

动词 work in:

1. add by mixing or blending on or attaching

Perhaps, in some cases, ABCinChina doesn’t want to wait. Hehe.

Cheers!
