mythia Posted September 4, 2008 at 10:45 AM Report Posted September 4, 2008 at 10:45 AM (edited) An interesting poll I found, dated last December, so very much *in* I think. Apologies if a similar if not the same topic has been discussed. Being a people quite famous, or rather, infamous for its desperate tries to maintain *face*, the Chinese takes serious notes of how they are perceived by foreigners, unlike the Americans I believe. Some of the results are quite matched to what I had in mind, though I am more interested in your views. http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i125/we1l/656-1.gif Link: http://pewresearch.org/pubs/656/how-the-world-sees-china Detailed report: http://pewglobal.org/reports/pdf/256.pdf Edited September 4, 2008 at 01:38 PM by imron Roddy, if you're going to make changes, at least get the URL correct ;-) Quote
renzhe Posted September 4, 2008 at 10:54 AM Report Posted September 4, 2008 at 10:54 AM I'm a bit surprised that the US and Russian (!) opinions are that positive, and that the Polish, Czech, Italian, Morroccan and Turkish opinions are so negative. Perhaps I've missed some recent events? The rest seems like I'd expect, including Germany, which is vehemently anti-China according to my observations. Quote
imron Posted September 4, 2008 at 11:19 AM Report Posted September 4, 2008 at 11:19 AM More interesting to me, is that countries like Australia aren't even on the list The world usually forgets about us, which is actually a good thing - it keeps us off everyone's radar. Quote
BrandeX Posted September 4, 2008 at 01:17 PM Report Posted September 4, 2008 at 01:17 PM I'd be interested to see this research done again, now post-olympics, and compare the differences from pre-olympics. Quote
ruoxuan Posted September 4, 2008 at 01:39 PM Report Posted September 4, 2008 at 01:39 PM I'm not surprised to see the polling result. But Britain's opinion is a bit out of my imagination. I thought it would be the opposite. I also saw this on the link offered by mythia. (don't know how to insert an image) I'm always blinded by media distortion. But do they offer a sound reason why they view china's growing economy and military power as a huge threat? After all, it is not China who imposes economic sanction or who's engaged in the Iraq War. I actually would be more interested to see such a poll about Japan or Australia since the chinese seem to have a complex feeling about Japan and since Australia seems to be out of the world's political attention. c_redman Posted September 4, 2008 at 02:40 PM Report Posted September 4, 2008 at 02:40 PM In the first graph, I was about to ask what was up with Italy. Now I see in the second chart it's "China's growing economy". I assume it's due to outsourcing fears, and probably trade imbalances as well. Quote
Outofin Posted September 4, 2008 at 05:38 PM Report Posted September 4, 2008 at 05:38 PM A obvious divide between developing countries and developed countries. Guess that makes the UK a developing country. Quote
zhxlier Posted September 4, 2008 at 08:16 PM Report Posted September 4, 2008 at 08:16 PM Here are the most recent, but still before-Olympic, results: http://pewresearch.org/pubs/918/china-olympics And yes, Australia is in the survey:mrgreen: I'd be interested to see this research done again, now post-olympics, and compare the differences from pre-olympics. renzhe Posted September 4, 2008 at 08:39 PM Report Posted September 4, 2008 at 08:39 PM Wow! What a plummet! I'm guessing the Lhasa riots had something to do with that. Quote
Outofin Posted September 4, 2008 at 09:34 PM Report Posted September 4, 2008 at 09:34 PM Interesting the report sees Anti-Americanism as a phenomenon (you can find the term in the caption or the first paragraph of a few sections), but avoids using “Anti-China” or other countries. Somehow I feel the same thing happens in this forum too. Our admins don’t like the use of “anti-China”, “China haters” and such. Quote
lilongyue Posted September 5, 2008 at 02:15 AM Report Posted September 5, 2008 at 02:15 AM As an American, I am outraged at this poll. I going to organize protests at all embassies of countries who think so poorly of the U.S., as well as boycotts of stores from those countries. I also denounce media bias against America. Now all I need is some catchy, nationalistic logo I can circulate and have everyone add to their IM software to demonstrate American solidarity. Quote
Guest realmayo Posted September 5, 2008 at 07:59 AM Report Posted September 5, 2008 at 07:59 AM I see in the first one 6% of people in China have an unfavourable view of China. Quote
Outofin Posted September 6, 2008 at 03:42 AM Report Posted September 6, 2008 at 03:42 AM For those who are interested in how the Olympics effect China's image, data is gradually coming out. WSJ: After the Games, China looks High-Tech Quote

bhchao Posted September 6, 2008 at 06:57 PM Report Posted September 6, 2008 at 06:57 PM Interesting that American public opinion of China is split, while American public opinion of the Chinese people has a 64% favorability rating. Quote
lilongyue Posted September 7, 2008 at 01:26 AM Report Posted September 7, 2008 at 01:26 AM I suggest "Freeedom Dumplings". That's a good one. How about "Democracy Dumplings"? Alliterations are always catchy. Interesting that American public opinion of China is split, while American public opinion of the Chinese people has a 64% favorability rating. I found it interesting that South Africans seem to think more unfavorably about China, and about every aspect of China, than almost any other country, except for how much they feel they've benefited from China!
