bigoxygen Posted September 10, 2008 at 02:06 AM Report Share Posted September 10, 2008 at 02:06 AM Hello this is my first post! I am looking some opinions on best electronic dictionary out there. Is Besta a good brand? Thank you
imron Posted September 10, 2008 at 03:51 AM Report Share Posted September 10, 2008 at 03:51 AM Hi bigoxygen, welcome to the forums. We already have many threads discussing the merits and shortcomings of various electronic dictionaries. I would suggest doing a search for "best electronic dictionary" and having a read through some of the results, and if you have further questions to post in one of those threads. lemur Posted September 10, 2008 at 08:46 AM Report Share Posted September 10, 2008 at 08:46 AM A few days ago, I did what imron suggested and ended up going with PlecoDict on my Treo 650. It is pretty neat and quite useful but I don't have a point of comparison since I've never used any other electronic dictionary. By the way, there is no such thing as "the best electronic dictionary". Qualifiers like "best" are relative to specific purposes.
melop Posted September 17, 2008 at 09:59 AM Report Share Posted September 17, 2008 at 09:59 AM I strongly recommend Lingoes: http://www.lingoes.net/ which is absolutely free!
JustinP Posted September 20, 2008 at 02:29 PM Report Share Posted September 20, 2008 at 02:29 PM I think Lingoes is just an on-line dictionary, but bigoxygen is looking for a "real" (hand-held electronic) dictionary? I used Besta models and they served me well. Not too thrill with the machine generated sound though but maybe the newer models produce real human voice? Shadowdh Posted September 20, 2008 at 08:37 PM Report Share Posted September 20, 2008 at 08:37 PM I have a pda/phone and use pleco... only dict I would use really... I saw many bubugaos and similar dicts while I was in China and to be honest I was leaning towards looking at getting one but 2 things make me glad I didnt go that route, the first was in class one of my 同学们 was always asking me to look up characters from the text in the book on my pda using pleco cos his electronic dictionary couldnt find it and the second is Pleco two... nicklenn Posted October 1, 2008 at 04:40 AM Report Share Posted October 1, 2008 at 04:40 AM I have owned besta twice now. If you are looking for traditional characters this dictionary is probably up with the best. However simplified input lacks in recognition even though it says it will understand. My first dictionary I paid around $200 i loved it. I mean it looks great and is so simple to use the functions. The only problem which is with most dictionaries the character writing. You have to know how to write characters fast and neat using such an annoying pen it provides u with. I just bought the new one on tv cause my gf loves the crystals on it. But The thing I HATE ABOUT THEM!!! THEY get damaged so easily so DO NOT DROP IT. I SUGGEST U BUY an expensive hard case to put it in so u dnt have to buy two like me!!!
