vanie Posted September 18, 2004 at 03:38 PM Report Posted September 18, 2004 at 03:38 PM I have a question. If (for example in Hungary) I met with an asian person, would it be an impolite question: Are you chinese? I don't know why, but I think it would be embarrassing for that asian person. Perhaps that's why in hungarian the "are you chinese" form sounds a little bit unusually... OK, it was my latest stupid question ) Quote
geraldc Posted September 18, 2004 at 03:44 PM Report Posted September 18, 2004 at 03:44 PM If you asked a Chinese person were they Chinese there wouldn't be a problem. If you asked a Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Thai person etc were they Chinese, they might get a bit annoyed. Best thing to do is ask them after you've found out their surname, and then take an educated guess to their country, and then ask to confirm. Quote

LiYuanXi Posted September 20, 2004 at 06:35 AM Report Posted September 20, 2004 at 06:35 AM In singapore, lots of people has a english name and a chinese name registered in their identity card. For me, i don't know why my father name me Miko. My chinese name is Huang yu ying. Normally in school, teachers call me Miko Huang. That is a weird combination! Chinese surname with Japanese name. So i always got the question "are you japanese?" or "is your mother japanese?" When i was in China, nobody believe i am a Singaporean. All of them think i am a Chinese from another province. In Singapore, some people told me i have a "china face". Quote
