How to say "Racist","Racism" and related words?

So...

I was at a bar last night, a nice small bar, i know the owners and I often go there for a quiet drink and a little chat. This night they had some friends and I got invited to drink with them.

One of the first things one of the chinese boys/men said was "Japanese no no no". I'm not japanese, i'm white, but i was obviously offended by this. After telling them I had a japanese (ex)girlfriend and many japanese friends they told me "Oh its ok, japanese girls are good. we dont like japanese boys". I know japan was responsible for many atrocities and a terrible terrible past, but I found this unacceptable and decided to leave. The chinese were drunk, thats no accuse, but I wanted to leave, i felt uncomfortable.

I'm a very not violent person but i'm quite big, especially in china (6 foot 5, about 2m) and when i went to leave they wouldnt let me. The room was such that I couldnt reasonably step over them without stepping on them. And after about five minutes of me first telling them I just want to go, and then eventually telling them if they dont move out of the i'll be "生气“, and then eventually trying to tell them that I was on the verge of hitting them i eventualy stepped over/on them to get out at which point somone grabbed me quite hard and i came very very close to smacking them. But i didnt. I left, and the owner came out and apologised to me. I'll be going back there because i like the place, the owners are nice, and i know this stuff just happens. But anyway, my question is....

How do you say racism, racist and any related words? What i really wanted to say was something like...

"I''m sorry, I dont feel confortable around racists and i want to go!" or

"I dont like racism, i'm leaving" or

"You are a racist, fuck off"

And then after they stopped me going for five minutes i wanted to say something like "Please get out of my way or will hurt you" or "Move or i'll fucking kill you".

I know racism is a problem in china but as a white person i've mostly recieved the 'good type of descrimination' and last night i didnt know any words or phrases to express how i felt.

In many situations I would be more than happy to talk about why they felt that way and have a decent discussion, but late at night (early in the morning) with people who have drunk too much i just wanted to leave.

Also, sorry if these swear words offend anyone, but thats what i eventually felt like saying....

种族 means race, 种族主义 means racism and 种族主义者(zhong3zu2zhu3yi4zhe3) means racist.

Just watch their TV and see how often they use 日本鬼子 which is a bad word for calling the Japanese. Racism is quite funny and no offence, people from the West have offended me so many times that I am sure it's a bigger problem in the West. I like racism as long as it's just in words especially when people call me an Iranian terrorist.:mrgreen:

and here are some insults that you can use to trigger a fight :lol::

去你的qu4ni3de=screw you

他妈的ta1ma1de=f you

操你妈cao1ni3ma1=f your mother

王八蛋wang2ba1dan4=bastard

住口zhu4kou3=shut up

I think 种族歧视 is another word for racism/ racial discrimination.

people call me an Iranian terrorist.:mrgreen:

But you seem to have amassed enough ammunition to fight back there:

去你的qu4ni3de=screw you

他妈的ta1ma1de=f you

操你妈cao1ni3ma1=f your mother

王八蛋wang2ba1dan4=bastard

住口zhu4kou3=shut up

Calling someone a racist here doesn't mean much, ie it doesn't have the negative connotation that is does in the west. Just go with rezaf's vocab list and you'll soon have your excuse to really go to work on someone :)

People are very racist everywhere including in Europe and in my own country. I don't think that racism is so high in China comparing to other places. Anyway I always take it as a joke. Once in London my Korean friends started saying things a little bit racist against the Chinese and the Japanese and I am sure that the Japanese also say the same things about the Chinese and Koreans. Just let it pass :wink:

Poly, that's a very uncomfortable situation, I'm glad you got out of it ok. From what I know it's best not to get in a fight in China, even when you're big and strong, because you will almost always be in the minority.

I think rezaf is right that telling people you feel they're racist is not going to help a lot, especially if the race in question is the Japanese and the racists are drunk. Best to just try and change the subject, or walk out, as you did.

instead of 種族主義者 i think i would just use 有種族歧視的人. i would also use 種族歧視 instead of 種族主義 for racism.

Nice rant, and I feel for your situation. But tell you what, 99% of Chinese are ra(ist by western standards. It's just sad truth.

Think of how many wars and how much blood it cost the European nations for them to come to terms with each other, not only that, but also the realisition that no race is inherently superior to another, they are just different. And think back about Japan-China-Korea, and even Vietnam, Indonesian etc. well they simply hadn't fought enough.

Come on, Westerners are WAY more racist. You just have to be a member of a minority group like Middle Easterns to realize it. At least the Chinese don't say it right in your face.:lol: I still think that a little bit of racism is good and funny especially in jokes. It helps people to put their anger and hatred in jokes instead of wars and maybe it helps people to forgive eachother as time goes by. Having said that I should admit that I don't want to participate in a racist conversation myself. There was a time that my classmate and I were sitting in a bus and there was a black boy near us and my classmate started saying racist things against black people in a low voice and how much he was afraid of them. I was offended but I let him finish his bullshit. The funny thing is that I don't usually get offended when people directly offend me.

you could say something like; 种族歧视的言论令我感到不安,我很反对。

when someone wont let you leave, even physically restraining you to where you are about to slap them, you can say; 让我走,不然我就揍你!

related vocab may include:

得罪 de2zui4- "to offend",

反对 fan3dui4- "to oppose",

胸怀狭窄 xiong1huai2 xia2zhai3- "narrow-minded",

种族歧视猪 zhong3zu2 qi2shi4 zhu1- "racist pig".

(日本猪 is a common insult for japanese, so flip it on the racists.)

I've had much more uncomfortable situations and there's not much you can do. My example: I just moved in to my apartment and went to dinner with my Chinese GF, and 3 drunk men next to us spent about one hour talking about how she's not a Chinese for being with a foreigner, and that I'm just "white trash" effecively.

Calling them a racist will do nothing, they'll just laugh it off. Just try to avoid these places and people.

thats true and good advice. sometimes you are just stuck in such a situation though. its best to just leave them be. they are low quality people anyhow.

once at a street market in southern china i was walking with my chinese wife and her mother. neither my wife nor i heard it, but apparently some people were saying "cant believe such a pretty girl married a monster like him". lol, i look so mean?

her mother was very angry with them. but i dont care. they are low quality people. thats why they're dirty and practically homeless. let them be.

I like it when people say racist things to me. As long as it doesn't involve hitting me it's funny to see people humiliate themselves like that. It's part of the fun of being an expat. Most of them are not bad people. They just assume that we don't understand what they say. It's like talking behind people's back. All of us do that sometimes, don't we? When people say these things about me I speak to them in Chinese and the joke will be on them. Both of the times that it happened to me in China they apologized to me(and it wasn't racist, it was more personal).

rezaf, your unyielding optimism is worth learning from, I wish there were more people like you

unfortunately no cure has been discovered yet for such cancers as racism and stupidity that it feeds on
