learning words and characters is far too boring i think. is there some forum where chinese and non-chinese can meet an write and read dual linguistically. i think that would be nice. is that possible in this forum?

I dont know any forums, but what you could do is to download and install QQ (there is an english version of the program, so even beginners can install it). QQ is a chat program that most mainland chinese people use (something very much like msn messenger).

If you put that you live abroad (i.e. not in china) in the settings many people will want to have a chat with you and you can learn a lot. some speak some english and want to improve their language skills.

I'm with you Schneeleopard, learning characters by rote memorization is pretty tough and largely boring. A friend of mine found this site that would match you with pen pals in mainland China, but I think the site disappeared (I can't remember exactly why). I might give QQ a try, but I'd be concerned that people would want to speak English with me! There really isn't a pen-pal matching site for this type of thing?
