So, I am moving with my wife and children to China next summer. I have two daughters, age 3 & 1 respectively, and am curious as to what the attitude is in China towards small children in restaurants.

My impression is in the US at family restaurants it's OK, but, if my friends are any indication, people generally frown upon it.

In Brazil, even nice restaurants, often have a play area with someone to watch the kids and no one seems to bat an eye if children run around. For me, it took some getting used to, but I liked the communal feel, though I realize your mileage may vary.

I lived in Japan as well, though kids weren't really on my radar at the time, but I believe that bringing small children to family type restaurants was fine.

Thanks for your help.

Doted upon by everyone, children are generally, foreign children even more so. Depends on the city - a second tier or less then the kids will be the centre of attraction should you and them go walk around. Based on experience of friends it can get annoying (children become attention seeking) or confusing (don't know what's being said to them). Getting a spare waiter to play with them shouldn't be too hard.

Unless you're going to a late night drinking den where the reception will be fine from all but the most unreasonable. This is based on the experience of the friendly Northeastern people, no real idea about the South.

Don't let them run around by themselves, simply because there are rarely play areas and waiters often carry hot soups. Also note that smoking is common in most restaurants, opt for non-smoking.

After raising a daughter for 1.5 years in Shanghai, I've been surprised by the number of restaurants in this city that have highchairs.

I'd be more worried about exposing them to the all pervasive cigarette smoke in most restaurants.

Thanks for the feedback. It helps to get a feel for what to expect. I've never been nervous about going abroad before, but bringing my daughters to somewhere we don't have family has certainly brought a different perspective.

As much as I enjoy the laidback atmosphere in Brazil regarding children, I don't let them run around the dining area there either. My nephew, however, is another story. :)

And another great point about the smoking. I'll definitely have to keep that in mind.

We'll be in Suzhou, so hopefully we'll experience some southern hospitality to match that of what Axel has experienced in the North. Highchairs would be a definite plus.

Thanks so much for everyone's input.

Well, they are actually almost exactly in the center of China, on the east coast. Anyways, I have heard it's a great place there. Welcome, and best of luck!

Children are much better cooked at home! With garlic, ginger and a bit of chilli.
