HashiriKata Posted October 25, 2008 at 08:48 AM Report Share Posted October 25, 2008 at 08:48 AM I am looking to get a tattoo down my spine 忠于忠诚,家族,友情,相爱,大笑的神情It looks to me that the tail end of this is going to go beyond the the spine...(And that will be very painful, no doubt! )
HashiriKata Posted October 25, 2008 at 09:27 AM Report Share Posted October 25, 2008 at 09:27 AM Or perhaps HashiriKata has got a better solution? Never thought of it but to me, the heart may be a better place for such sentiments.
Hofmann Posted October 25, 2008 at 02:53 PM Report Share Posted October 25, 2008 at 02:53 PM I think the OP just wants "loyalty" translated.
diesel423 Posted October 28, 2008 at 02:57 PM Author Report Share Posted October 28, 2008 at 02:57 PM I got this translated, does this make more sense.... loyalty 忠 family 家庭 friendship (not sure if this is 2 options!) 友誼/友情 love 愛 laughter 笑
Lu Posted October 29, 2008 at 04:26 PM Report Share Posted October 29, 2008 at 04:26 PM Those translations in your last post are correct. For friendship, I'd go for 友誼. But all put together, those characters will look like a big jumble of words, not very nice or elegant to put on your body for the rest of your life. They don't belong thrown together in one long line down one's spine. If you're sure you want a Chinese character tattoo, I'd suggest you either pick one of those words and have them tattood somewhere, or pick a line of poetry or a saying to tattoo down your back. Christina99 Posted October 30, 2008 at 01:40 AM Report Share Posted October 30, 2008 at 01:40 AM 以诚相待,家庭、友谊、爱。 I guess 爱 is 爱人. 友谊 is 朋友。家庭 is 家人。 So They may want to say " honesty is the key to keeping family, friendship and love."
diesel423 Posted October 30, 2008 at 09:04 AM Author Report Share Posted October 30, 2008 at 09:04 AM 以诚相待,家庭、友谊、爱。 So is that what the above means inc the circle at the end, honesty is the key to keeping friends family and love? I quite like that sayin and I appreciate what you mean about the words jumbled any suggestions on a saying along those lines but trying to keep it to 9ish symbols! renzhe Posted November 5, 2008 at 09:49 AM Report Share Posted November 5, 2008 at 09:49 AM (edited) 爪 = claw 独 = alone; independent; single 日 = day; sun What it means, no clue. The last character has a diacritic mark to the right of it This could be ( '' ) symbol put next to a character when writing caligraphy, and it is a shorthand for writing a character twice. Or (but this is a very long shot) Check this out. Apparently, the Vietnamese used a diacritic at the top right corner to mark the reading of a certain characters. Once again, this is pure guessing. Based on all of this, I'm guessing that the tattoo might mean "seize every day" ?? Edited November 5, 2008 at 01:35 PM by renzhe

skylee Posted November 5, 2008 at 04:19 PM Report Share Posted November 5, 2008 at 04:19 PM Lonely / loneliness is 孤獨. Vertically written in traditional characters it is - 孤 獨 And in simplified characters it is - 孤 独 Please show 孤獨 and 孤独 to the tattoo shop owner and tell him he is wrong. renzhe Posted November 5, 2008 at 05:46 PM Report Share Posted November 5, 2008 at 05:46 PM Well, the first character is missing the radical, so it could still be salvaged. Still no idea what the 日 is supposed to mean. "Loneliness every day"?
Basser Posted November 5, 2008 at 06:41 PM Report Share Posted November 5, 2008 at 06:41 PM 5 minutes ago i downloaded a free program called "Chinese Symbol Studio 3.3" i typed : Lonely and got these = and for loneliness = Well if the first is correct, the tattoo can be saved, like Renzhe mentioned P.S. Here in Greece the tattoo shop's are not so professional (at least in small towns) and offcourse its a big mistake of my friend not making a research about this tattoo before doing it, not now after Anyway, thank you all very much!!! renzhe Posted November 6, 2008 at 01:34 AM Report Share Posted November 6, 2008 at 01:34 AM Oh, the last character is a broken '的'? I'd never come up with that. Then it might be salvaged. 的 is a gramatical particle used to connect an adjective with the noun. If 孤独 is "lonely" and 人 is "person", then 孤独的人 is a "lonely person". Gramatically, you need this particle there in most cases. Usually, you wouldn't use it when the adjective is isolated like that, on a tattoo, but it's not wrong either. Salvaging to tattoo to say 孤独的 is probably the best thing you can do with that tattoo. It still won't look too pretty (the caligraphy is not good), but it won't look too terrible, and it will mean what it was meant to mean. Right now, it doesn't really mean anything.
