SivDJ Posted October 24, 2008 at 04:18 PM Report Posted October 24, 2008 at 04:18 PM Hi, I would like to have the following name meanings translated. They will be used to mark names on a number of Nakaya pens I am in the process of buying. The pen manufacturer limits the name to 4 characters. Here are the name meanings and also some help that I have gotten so far: 1, "resides in the cave of the heart". Cave of the heart is likened to your soul or the part within all humans that God resides in. 心穴居士 2, "servant of the supreme one". Servant in the sense of one devoted to service of their master. supreme could mean something like enlightened (absolute knowledge). 3, "A poet who stands by his principles". 正直詩人 4, "One who makes verses" where verse is as in the verse of a song or poem (similar to poet but also applies to songs) - sonwgriter/poet Thanks in advance for your help!! Hofmann Posted October 25, 2008 at 05:09 AM Report Posted October 25, 2008 at 05:09 AM (edited) Welcome. I just want to comment that Nakaya is a fountain pen manufacturer. The OP is getting some pens customized for him. Up to four characters will be written under the lacquer that covers each pen. These pens cost hundreds of dollars on average. Let's not make careless translations. Link to Nakaya customization description Edited October 25, 2008 at 05:30 AM by Hofmann Quote
skylee Posted October 25, 2008 at 05:48 AM Report Posted October 25, 2008 at 05:48 AM I think it is nice to give valuable pens nice names (as in giving nice names to nice swords). But if the names are supposed to be descriptions of the people who use them, then one should be careful that they should be subtle and not embarrasing lest the names make the owners seem too 狂 or too 囂. And although there is room for 4 characters on each pen, "leaving blank" can sometimes be beautiful too. 1. 心穴居士 - you may wish to consider 靈隱 in place of 心穴. also consider using 者. 4. consider 墨客. SivDJ Posted October 26, 2008 at 06:40 PM Author Report Posted October 26, 2008 at 06:40 PM We're making good progress - so what are your thoughts on: 1, 靈隱居士 2, 侍の神 3, 正直詩人 4, 作曲家 or 墨客 Quote
Hofmann Posted October 27, 2008 at 02:48 AM Report Posted October 27, 2008 at 02:48 AM の isn't a Kanji. I think No. 2 should be 神之侍. Quote
