can someone explain this concept to me, i have a feeling it will be important for future business ventures?

A simple explanation, 面子=image (形象).

I'm not sure that really explains what I am getting at. I am talking about the concept of actions taking place which involve one party losing face.

A question I have about face:

In this book I'm reading, it says one way of losing face is by dressing down a person or insulting them in front of peers.

Then later in the book it says that Westerners may not be accustomed to going to rural areas in China, and being started at glaringly.

Do rules of face only apply to the more urban areas? Or are these rural citizens causing one to lose face and ignoring their typical customs?

Also how important is the concept of 關係 still?
