Scoobyqueen Posted October 29, 2008 at 11:04 AM Report Posted October 29, 2008 at 11:04 AM Should the first part of the word 畜牧 be pronounced "chu4" or "xu4". I guess 畜 on its own is chu4 but together with 牧 it becomes xu4mu4. Someone I heard pronounced it chu4 but then when I asked him, upon reflection, he said it should be xu4. I was just wondering what the confusion was about. Quote
Hanyu'sWay Posted October 29, 2008 at 05:58 PM Report Posted October 29, 2008 at 05:58 PM 畜 as a noun means (mostly domesticated) animals and should be pronounced as chu4. As a verb it means raising such animals and should be pronounced as xu4. 牲畜 are domesticated animals while 畜牲 can be the same or it can be an insult. Quote
