Sharptongue Posted October 30, 2008 at 08:59 AM Report Posted October 30, 2008 at 08:59 AM I heard a terrific (even spine tingling) song in a Canadian-made documentary about the rise of capitalism in China. The documentary is called Red Capitalism : http://voyager.uvm.edu/bibs/bid675492.html There are a number of websites mentioning this award-winning documentary. The song was presented at the end of the show, and was derisively described as being reduced to a showpiece in a Hong Kong nightclub act. The same song turned up in one the middle of one of my favourite soft porns, Unforgetful Holiday. It is sung on karaoke by the main characters, mainly a mainlander. Then it also turned up in a long documentary about the people who organized and participated in Tiananmin Square, a few years after the event. Anyone have any idea what this song is? It is clearly a very well-known song. I found some software to annotate sheet music, and I wrote the approximate tune. Fortunately, the software also renders the notes into a music track. Here is the sheet music I wrote from memory : http://members.ozemail.com.au/~sharptongue/RevSong.jpg I uploaded the MIDI files to my site as well, but they are not showing as loaded. Do I need to zip them ? I can email them to anyone who might like to guess. I have been trying to ID this song for 15 YEARS. So any useful clues would be much appreicated. Quote

YuehanHao Posted October 31, 2008 at 02:44 AM Report Posted October 31, 2008 at 02:44 AM Wow! I am impressed by both of you. After listening to the suggested song, it does indeed seem to fit the written music, but I could never have guessed it myself. Alas, I can't read music well. That song is called 血染的风采, or maybe "Blood Soaked Elegance." I read the song was popular during or after the Anti-Vietnam Self-Defense Counterattack, and was also later appropriated by some students in the late 1980s. It was among a large number of Chinese songs I downloaded some time ago and listened to many times. I am too sentimental and liked it a lot, but could not understand the lyrics at that time. I keep thinking I am not making any progress in learning Chinese, but I guess I am good enough now at least to understand what this song is about. 约翰好 Quote
YuehanHao Posted October 31, 2008 at 03:02 AM Report Posted October 31, 2008 at 03:02 AM Oh, just to correct myself, I read now the song is from 1987, but it was to commemorate the dead soldiers from the conflict with Vietnam in 1979. Sorry, should have checked that first. 约翰好 Quote

THAT'S IT ! *wild excitement and choral cheers* An e-hug and e-kiss to skylee. "YuehanHao That song is called 血染的风采, or maybe "Blood Soaked Elegance." I read the song was popular during or after the Anti-Vietnam Self-Defense Counterattack" Now, my next task is to find the actual version I heard on Red Capitalism. The vocalist sounded very similar. It could well have been the same singer on a different recording. Does anyone know who the singer was here ? It sounds a bit high to be Anita Mui, who is listed as the singer of one version on the wikipedia entry. And does anyone know where I can find the lyrics ? I'll be trawling Google myself, but a native Chinese could certainly do the search better. And Trad Chinese would be preferable, as my grasp of Simplified is, well, rather simple Quote
HashiriKata Posted October 31, 2008 at 11:52 AM Report Posted October 31, 2008 at 11:52 AM Here's the lyrics for you, baby! Can I claim an e-hug and e-kiss as well?
skylee Posted October 31, 2008 at 01:48 PM Report Posted October 31, 2008 at 01:48 PM Thanks for the hug and kiss. I am glad that it's the right song. It was a wild guess. I can't read music well either. Quote

This line is not shown on the lyrics posted above. I'm referring to the version by 董文华(董文華). Quote
YuehanHao Posted November 12, 2008 at 01:06 AM Report Posted November 12, 2008 at 01:06 AM I'm not great in Chinese, but I didn't hear a last line in any of the versions posted in this thread other than 血染的风采. So I could be wrong, but I believe the singer just sings a long, drawn out version of this line in each of the versions of this song, backed by the chorus. Does it sound like something else to others? 约翰好 Quote
