Xiao Kui Posted November 1, 2008 at 01:17 AM Report Posted November 1, 2008 at 01:17 AM I would like to introduce my Chinese English students to SRS software such as Supermemo, Anki, Mnemosyne, etc. but was wondering if there was a Chinese equivalent, so they could have the interface in Chinese? Thanks in advance!! Quote
renzhe Posted November 1, 2008 at 01:22 AM Report Posted November 1, 2008 at 01:22 AM Mnemosyne has a Chinese translation. In fact, they have Mainland, Taiwan, HongKong and Singapore versions (I can only wonder about the differences between some of these). Also see this. If you run it on a Chinese system, it should have a Chinese interface automatically. Quote
ABCinChina Posted November 1, 2008 at 02:13 AM Report Posted November 1, 2008 at 02:13 AM Yes, when I installed Mnemosyne on work computer, it was in Chinese. Anki has a nice interface, but it was laggy when I installed it. And it's quite hard to get things configured for the first time. I wouldn't even consider Supermemo due to what I've heard about its interface. Quote
Xiao Kui Posted November 1, 2008 at 02:17 AM Author Report Posted November 1, 2008 at 02:17 AM (edited) Thanks renzhe, I was wondering if there was a Chinese Mnemosyne, but unfortunately I've had difficulty connecting with the mnemosyne website the last 2 days. Now I am able to connect but only using HotSpot Shield or a proxy (Mnemosyne blocking IPs from SW China??) I will probably put my Mnemosyne install files on a disk or upload it somewhere since it looks like my students might have difficulty downloading it. thanks again! ABC, Thanks for the confirmation abt Mnemosyne installing in Chinese. I use Supermemo myself for my own personal study. I learned it long ago, but I would never recommend it to my ESL students because of its clunky interface - it's difficult enough to navigate if English is your first language! maybe I'll end up switching to Mnemosyne myself if the demonstration with the students goes well. What I really need for my own personal use now is an SRS that supports ink so I can scribble Hanzi flashcards on my tablet pc. ( I know paper supports ink, but I've never been faithful with paper flashcards.) Edited November 1, 2008 at 03:14 AM by Xiao Kui Quote
ABCinChina Posted November 1, 2008 at 08:28 AM Report Posted November 1, 2008 at 08:28 AM Hello, I don't know why, but the Great Firewall of China has blocked the Mnemosyne homepage. So many unnecessary things are blocked here which is pretty annoying to say the least. Quote
renzhe Posted November 1, 2008 at 08:03 PM Report Posted November 1, 2008 at 08:03 PM What I really need for my own personal use now is an SRS that supports ink so I can scribble Hanzi flashcards on my tablet pc. ( I know paper supports ink, but I've never been faithful with paper flashcards.) If you can save your scribbles as images, Mnemosyne supports that. i.e. you can have images as your questions/answers. Quote
roddy Posted February 8, 2010 at 08:14 AM Report Posted February 8, 2010 at 08:14 AM Just want to bump this as I'm looking to recommend some kind of SRS program to a friend, but I'd really like it to be in Chinese so I don't have to do any more technical support than necessary. Will point in the direction of Supermemo in Chinese, but if there are any other recommendations . . . Quote
imron Posted February 8, 2010 at 11:21 AM Report Posted February 8, 2010 at 11:21 AM If you don't want to provide much in the way of technical support, steer clear of Supermemo at all costs. It is byzantine in nature. Quote
querido Posted February 8, 2010 at 12:05 PM Report Posted February 8, 2010 at 12:05 PM I wouldn't even consider Supermemo due to what I've heard about its interface. I've owned it. I also recommend against it. Passionately. Check again to see if the mnemosyne website is blocked, but let me point out that the mnemosyne *support forum* is via google groups. (not blocked?) The anki forum is also on google groups. By the author of anki, 21Jan10: "Most of the interface has already been translated into Chinese. You can change it in the preferences, and people running Anki on a computer set to Chinese should have Anki appear in Chinese by default. " Quote
renzhe Posted February 8, 2010 at 12:21 PM Report Posted February 8, 2010 at 12:21 PM Recent versions of both Anki and Mnemosyne will run with a Chinese interface automatically if installed on a Chinese computer. The choice between the two is generally one of preference. Mnemosyne is very simplistic, while Anki has many powerful plugins and analysis tools. Both work well as far as scheduling flashcards is concerned. 1 Quote
chrix Posted February 8, 2010 at 12:54 PM Report Posted February 8, 2010 at 12:54 PM Well, the anki forum is nothing for newbies, that's for sure... Quote
roddy Posted February 8, 2010 at 01:52 PM Report Posted February 8, 2010 at 01:52 PM Thanks. Might send a couple of links and then ignore all attempts at contact for a couple of days. Quote
