當我在讀百度的一篇叫做「封建社會」的條目，我發現那裡頭有一個我不了解的句子。

大大小小的君主受到分封後各自為政，建立屬於自己的城邦。

這個句子的英文翻譯是甚麼？我自己翻譯是：After being granted titles, monarchs of all sizes set up their own sovereign city-states. 但是我覺得這個翻譯並沒有傳達原文的語義。

各位有甚麼提議嗎？

各自为政是不是可以这样理解：Every monarch does things in their own way？

"After being granted their fiefdoms, title-holders all ruled independently and set up city-states which belonged to them"; (I presume that 數於 = 屬於, but I may be wrong). The translation is perhaps more free, but 君主 were not always monarchs or kings, they could well be dukes or earls or barons depending on the title at enfeoffment.

After the two lectures about matriculation in July and August, US Golden Bridge Education Center, which dedicated in offering the most accurate information on matriculation and universities to Chinese parents, will give a lecture named “Getting Into the College of Your Choice” to meet Chinese parents’ heavy demand again.

應 here means "respond to" or "according to". 應……要求means “respond to one’s request.” or “according to one’s request/ demand”.

2. 講座將由哈佛大學一年級學生Jessica Zuo和她的母親張麗欣博士主講，在3個多小時的時間裡母女二人將和大家一起暢談申請大學的成功之道，以及經驗分享。

我現在已經了解「應……要求」。不過，我還是不懂「裹足不前」和「心懷鬼胎」這兩句成語的用法。其實，我已經參考過許多字典了，但是很多字典不是不提共這兩句成語的例文，就是直接引用古文。我是因為希望能參考比較現代化的句子而了解這兩句成語的現代用法才會要求各位幫我造句。所以如果不嫌棄的話，可以幫我造造句子嗎？〈也可以幫我糾正一下文法麼？〉

我早知道這小子心懷鬼胎，只是沒料到他這麼快就動手了。

I have known he’s got dirty on his mind for a long time, but I didn’t predict that he took action so soon.

目前，工業發展在這個鎮上裹足不前，所以這個鎮的失業率很高。

Now, industry development in this town is at a standstill, so the unemployment rate is very high.

即使 here means “even”. Below is the interpretation from my Oxford Advanced Learner’s English – Chinese Dictionary, fourth edition，on P.493.

even adv.

1. used to emphasize sth unexpected or surprising in what one is saying, or to invite a comparison with what might have happened, etc.

It was cold there even in July, ie. So it must have been very cold in winter. 那里即使七月份都很冷。
